I was at a local computer store where I live I couldn't begin to believe the prices I saw. A 1.4GHz TBird for $249 and they amazingly had a Koolance 2 case... $650... I was blown away. I'm starting my own place in the next week here and all I can say is that I'm going to lay waste to the competition....

ha! well... if you try and build your own computer at the HP website, they charge something like 250 dollars to upgrade from 128Mb to 256Mb RAM. The general public has no idea how much they are getting ripped off! I actually know of a local computer store in my area that charges decent prices for hardware. Good place to get monitors and cases and other stuff that has expensive shipping.

Good luck with your business! I hope you destroy the competition!

They charge that for a reason, B&M retail is a biotch with price drops on chips and such

It will piss people off. They want to come in and get the part NOW.

Sad to say, if you want to make anything, you need higher prices or an amazingly high volume.

Unless you are just doing this for fun to suplement your allowence or something.

Well I'll carry normal stock of things like ram and things like that.. but I won't be keeping large money items in stock simply because prices fall I and I don't like paying extra and selling for less.

And you should see some of the places around here... most of them ask the customer to come and pick up their systems in 2 - 3 weeks... it's nuts... I'm talking about like 1 week because of shipping, burn-in and everything... they just don't have good shops around here

Yes, they really can suck. I ordered a dual processor system, all SCSI, I knew exactly what I wanted, what motherboard, what hard drive, the processor speed...etc.
When it came in it was a single processor system, differen't mobo (not even same manufacturer), less RAM, no SCSI...
When I complained they said that was what I ordered. BS! Fortunately I got my money back, but I wasted 2 weeks waiting for that stupid system.

Not to mention the sales clerks can be downright rude. I was looking for a HSF and wandered into a local shop on a whim. They had one in the display case. I asked the guy, "Will this work for a 1.4GHz Athlon?" He said, "Yep." I asked, "Could I see it please?" and he said "Sure, go ahead." and didn't open the case. In other words, I was seeing it. He wouldn't remove it from the case and told me I could judge the quality without touching it.

kreno, good luck with your business!....but we'll see what tune your singing after next year: after you've met deadlines, made payroll, paid space rent, estimated taxes, business taxes, local taxes, social security taxes, sales taxes, import taxes, personal insurance, employee insurance, property insurance, accident insurance, umemployment insurance, inventory control, bookeeping, advertising, economic slowdowns, declining customer demand, uncollected debts, price hikes and lawsuits.

Make sure you have a sound business plan, 3 years of operating capital, and setting your own hours(all of them) and with luck and hard work you'll survive to be one of those overpriced local guys, rather than the 80% of all businesses that fail within their first 3 years.
