Local pickup via Ebay?

If you were to bid on an item that is located close to you, would it be normal for the seller to refuse local pickup and demand that they ship it?

Edit: I bid on a Nintendo Wii that is located within 5 minutes of me, and the auction ends in an hour. The seller lists the shipping at $30. I probably should have asked if Local Pickup was available, but who knew if the seller would respond within an hour.

it can happen, yes

i have bought stuff (through ebay) from a "local" pawn shop and they allowed me to pick it up

but if it is some little old lady with 1000 cats, she might not want you stopping by

Local pickup is a PITA unless you have established business hours. I've had people take days to come pick up a $10 item so they could save $5 in shipping charges. Not worth it for me.

Some places that take a profit on shipping won't do it. Like all those 0.01 auctions with $50 shipping.

People that are selling few items don't care..
It's the companys that are selling to make a living on ebay that don't want you to do local pickup. They make profit on shipping also..
