It happened just next door to TN.

TN was leaking idiots into neighboring states?

Its because the land is all warped around Tennessee. Its not normal like Illinois where the land is flat for miles and miles in every direction.

They have them there mountains! I would close the state too because those mountains are all vertical instead of normal horizontal land. Terrain is supposed to be 2 dimensions not 3!

got almost half a foot and a couple hours of sleet/ice chips on top of that. since nothing other than highway and a couple major city streets will be plowed, fully expect the schools to be closed until next week as temps are well below freezing until the weekend.

To be fair, I live in an area that gets tons of snow, and I don't use snow tires either. Nowhere to keep them.

Neither do I. There might be two or three days a year where snow tires would come in handy, but that's not enough to justify the cost. Roads get plowed and salted quickly enough in the city. Just slow down, don't drive like an asshat, and you'll be fine on all-seasons.

Up here in northern indiana we are making our own emergencies. Anytime it snows now they declare a watch or warning and then because of the watch or warning they decide not to plow to 'encourage us to stay off the roads'.

So basically, treat normal winter weather like a snow emergency and use it as an excuse to not fund the snow plows or buy salt.

How are those horse-drawn plows working out for ya?

I guess they don't have the equipment to salt or sand the roads down there.

They have very little stuff to take care of snow or ice. About 2-3 years ago, we had a good snowfall around here (probably 3-6"), and they were using construction equipment to clear the roads -- it's all they had!

Everybody's probably on summer tires too.

Prior to moving to the south, I lived in Pennsylvania and New York. Those two states have something in common when it comes to cars: they both have mandatory auto inspections. In Alabama, we do not have car inspections, and it doesn't take long to see the result. There are cars on the road that make my eyes widen at how dilapidated they are. I've seen vehicles missing hoods, trunks, and/or bumpers. I wouldn't put it past them to have horribly worn tires, which would explain why some people drive so damn slow in the rain. I mean... the ground will be mildly moist with no rainfall at the present time and people will still drive 10-15 below the speed limit.

Meanwhile, an hour south they were screaming for snowmageddon and icepocalypse. We got... rain.

I went out to see a movie on Sunday, and I stopped off at Kroger first. I was a bit surprised to see the gas station full and tons of people in the parking lot. It took me a second to remember the impending storm, and I realized why. :\

My old stomping grounds has this hill to deal with every time there is snow/ice on the ground. The hill is a 6% grade that is 20 city blocks up/down with each intersection leveling off (stepped hill). I used to live two streets up from this video and drove that thing every day.

That's why I liked driving a "winter rat", you can smash it up and not give a shit...lol!

Meanwhile, an hour south they were screaming for snowmageddon and icepocalypse. We got... rain.

I almost died in that rain last night. :colbert:

Seriously.

I had to swerve out of the left-most lane to avoid a car that had smashed into the median wall and was partially in my lane. It was almost impossible to see it in the rain because there were no lights and no responders. Even if that was all, when I swerved to avoid it I could have easily lost control and hit the wall myself, but that wasn't all: The car was off to my left and the where was off to my right, forcing another swerve and driving right over other debris.

Fearing that someone was still stuck in the car, I pulled over against the median wall far enough away to avoid my vehicle being involved in subsequent accidents and ran to the car while calling 911. I probably parked twice as far away as I should have because I was out of breath from running back and forth. They were aware of it but I couldn't confirm it was the same car at the time because I was too far away and my glasses were covered with rain. We were off the phone when I got there and I found it empty.

Another driver showed up and I told him that I was trying to get the lights on but was worried that someone would hit us. I could not find the hazard/emergency lights and could not safely stay there. When we gave up the owner had returned to his vehicle from... somewhere. He looked fine and was just standing there, which kinda made me mad that he had ever abandoned it like that and put more people in danger in the first place. Without even asking if he was OK, I told him it wasn't safe and asked if he knew how to get the emergency lights on. He told me some BS about the lights not working as if the battery was damaged or disconnected in the crash when all the dash/interior lights were working. Another car had swerved around and hit the loose wheel in the road. Luckily, they didn't lose control and kept going. It was obvious that we couldn't safely stand there and talk about it.

Visibility was so bad that an emergency vehicle saw my lights and stopped at my vehicle instead, so I ran back. They were gone when I got there but I assumed that they were going back to the other car. Once I could tell that my tires weren't flat from the debris I had run over, I went on my way.

Every second I was on that median I was in extreme danger.

Sounds like just about every tractor trailer or dump truck here. :D

First time in the office this week. Just sleet, no snow. No snow plow, either. Your choice of crunchy-white or slick-black ice to drive on. Freezing rain on Friday to add a nice glaze, i.e., another Netflix-binging weekend. That's winter in the south.

Apparently OP missed the memo about the 1 to 1 1/2 in sheet of ice covering most roads on Monday that thawed and refroze on Tuesday.

23 injury crashes and 182 non-injury crashes in a 12 hour time frame on Monday in Nashville alone.

I swear that we have allowed the stupid fucking news media influence this shit for some stupid reason. Elected officials believe the bullshit that the news spews now more than ever and make fucking decisions based on their armageddon type reporting on minor shit.

GAH! I increasingly hate this world we have allowed to develop around us. Used to be as American we took risks others were too afraid to take on. Now we are a bunch of pussies. Those of us that aren't are so outnumbered that it is almost not worth trying.

I think this is why I still work for the US Army, because at least we still deal with shitty shit enough to realize what real danger is.

This. I had about and inch of solid ice at my place in Nashville. I didn't get snow until Wednesday morning. I have no problem driving in snow but I'm not driving on ice.

OP did you actually do anything other than roll out of bed and head to Jack in the Box? How much travel did you do on Monday?
