Not that I've seen. You can delete partitions and format, but I haven't seen a zero fill option. You'll likely have to do that with a utility, and I haven't zero filled a drive since the spinning hard drive days (I usually just use the Clean command in Windows 10) when getting a used drive.

Ok. Wiping the drive and just formatting it should be ok, I think, right?

I've seen people comment about the PCIe 4.0 drives, they install in about 10 seconds. Is that how it is for this drive?

It won't be 10 seconds, but if you haven't installed Windows in a while, you'll still be impressed. Plus, it won't use anywhere near the power that the PCIe 4.0 drives use. 🙂

I want to say it takes around 5 minutes or so. However, if you want to have a local account instead of using a Microsoft account to log into your PC, make sure to not connect it to the internet during install. That way you can create your local account, boot to your desktop, and then let Windows do its various updates.

Wow, that's something new, thanks for the heads-up!

I think the comment I read about the PCIe 4.0 windows install said it was about 10 seconds till the first reboot? Either way it's just one more step closer to this new platform. I'm building for a faster gaming machine but tweaking this i7 970 Windows 10 Pro X58 rig for the past 10yrs has really given this thing a run. I honestly am still a little indecisive about this build but I'm halfway into it and I'm just trying to jump on the opportunity I have with this 970 Pro but by the time I get this thing together it might be late in the year - oof! I don't play too many games, just Unreal Tournament 4, CS:GO, and Rising Storm Vietnam. I might install a few other games with the 1TB drive now but not anything that would warrant the drive size until it's reallocated to a storage drive so there's where the size comes in.

Thanks for all the help so far,

Cheers

Uhh, guys, yes, you can zero-out a drive with a Win10 USB boot stick.

Get to the drive selection screen, hit LSHIFT-F10, should open Command Prompt, type DISKPART, type LIST DISK, type SELECT DISK #, where # is the number of the listed disk that you want to clean, type LIST DISK again, to make sure that one is selected, then type CLEAN ALL to zero-wipe the drive. There's no progress bar, you might be sitting there for a while. Then just type EXIT, EXIT, EXIT, and then click Refresh on the disk-selection screen, then New, then follow the prompts, then Install, and continue on from there.

I didn't say it wasn't possible in Windows 10, I just said not that I've seen. I haven't needed to use that sort of thing since the Windows 7 days, back when I still was using spinners, so its been a few years. 🙂

But that's good info to know (for when others might see this thread), and need to zero fill a drive.

Thanks @VirtualLarry I might give that a try. Do they have that also on the DVD disc?

I have a Windows 7 64 Pro disc but I thought that they discontinued the upgrade to Windows 10 a while back, will I be able to if I install Windows 7 64 Pro on the X570 rig and then upgrade to Windows 10 Pro 64? I know I'll have to call in to Microsoft, that's not a problem I just thought they stopped offering the free upgrade to Windows 10 from 7. If there is a way I can just buy the CPU and be done with the build.

Picked her up. It was $231 then $250 after tax. Box was torn, doesn't any appreciate a clean undamaged packaging box these days? When I buy computer stuff the packaging is just as important as the hardware, to me. I keep them in like-new condition - haha
