Just heard on the local news this morning that some kid in our area apparently created a directional EMP gun. Details are schetchy but from the pictures of the device that police captured, it looks like a hair dryer and some serious electrical overload. Wires are coming out of that thing all over the place! Apparently they used a motor cycle battery to charge the thing and then they'd fire it at anything electronic in the local area. They apparently fried several TV's and at least one computer. I'm not one for people destroying stuff, but those are some D**n smart kids! Too bad once again a really smart person has used their brains for something evil and got busted for it. But that's just crazy. The kids got the brains to make an EMP gun and he's out destroying things in the neighborhood and getting jailed for destruction of property. *sigh* Kid probubly could have sold that design and been able to pay for college and still live very comfy afterwords. Now he's got a rap sheet and his toy has been destroyed. He'll probubly be banned from ever making another one, which means he's screwed now. :(

The police destroyed his toy?

Stupid police ignorant fvcks!

The military has yet to make any portable directional emp device.. If that's what the kids have done, (motorcycle battery seems portable enough to me) then this would be a first. The police might have destroyed something that could very well be useful.

Yeah, I would think so too. But they must have decided the device was too dangerous or something and trashed it. They apparently wrecked like 4 computers and 19 TV's. :Q

I don't have more, but what you wanna bet some defence contractor comes down and signs a big contract with these kids for their design? Prototype or not. Now all they gotta do is replace all the busted TV's and computers and they'll be fine. Well, so long as the cops don't bust their skulls in interrigations and make them braindead.

I built a radar jammer circa 1989ish for a person. I tuned it using a buddy's squad car radar, but it (the police radar) stopped working after about 5 minutes. He had to put it in for service.

I don't know if I fried it or it was a coincidence but my friend was pissed.

If true, this could be the best advertising the kid could get

I'm looking, I'm looking! So far the only station that's reported it that I can find doesn't have a website. :(

Just about anybody can make a EMP gun, BUT the problem is the ones that have enoug power to do any damage are HUGE, and the small ones have to be within a couple of feet to work.

So I think the news station is either a idiot or had a prank pulled on them.

Sounds fake to me.

So the military, with it's almost limitless resources, has yet to be able to build a portable, directional EMP gun, yet this kid makes one out of a hair dryer?

And this is news why? Directional EMPs have been around for awhile. I'm surprised we don't see more of them on the news.

Considering the USAF requires sensitive electronics to be hardened against "EMP attack" I'd say they're around. :p

BBC News Link - calls it an "HPM" - High Power Microwave - but that's the principle behind the EMP.

Also, check up on flux compression generators - the "poor man's EMP".

For improved performance, fine-tune some parabolic reflectors. ;)

Only for testing purposes, naturally.
