OK, here is my rant.
I've got a job that I've been pretty happy with. But I've put my resume together and started looking at some of the job sites. Seems like at least half the postings, I read throught it, it sounds like a good job, then at the bottom it says "LOCAL CANDIDATES ONLY". WTF?

Why in the hell do companies put job postings on sites like monster.com and dice.com when they will only consider local candidates. Don't they realize these are national job sites? Don't they realize that only 1 out of 1000 people that see their posting actually live in the area they are in? Wouldn't they be much better off just putting an ad in the local paper? It is so f'ing irritating to have to wade through 1000 job postings when fewer than half of them will even consider you as a candidate because you aren't local.

you can still apply for those jobs...but you have to make it clear up front that you'll pay your own relocation.

When I got my first degree, I got several interviews through Monster. Of course I had a science degree and they were for sales jobs.

and pay to go there for interviews. Since 99% of candidates won't pay arifare just for a chance at a job it makes complete sense to say "locals only" so the 99% don't waste the HR person's time.

Are you really willing to pay airfare across the country just to interview?

I understand why they say it if they won't pay for travel to the interview or relocation. I just don't understand why they post it on national job sites like that.

because believe it or not a lot of people look on monster.com because lots of tech jobs don't get posted in the paper. Think of it this way, if you're trying to hire someone for a technical position, why post it in a non-technical medium like the newspaper?

Monster.com is not a national-only site...many local companies to your area probably post jobs there.

Because some idiot will claim why should he pay travel to be interviewed or some equally retarded drivel. Saying Local Candidates Only stops the buck there.
