With the $20 cdrw deals at OM every week, makes you wonder if you shelling out $90 bucks it's worth having a plextor or not ... thanks for the deal! =)

Are Plextors really THAT much better than other drives (a lite-on for instance)? Faster drives can be found for signifigantly less money and I've never had any read or write problems with my lite-ons....

$129.99 less $40 rebate appears to be the normal price for Plextor 40x12x40 at Best Buy.

AT the plextor site there is a $20 rebate if the upc code of this drive is 7_6507510588_2 or 7_6507510589_9. PDF form here. Both rebates require original UPC and I don't know how Best Buy handles that. Rebate valid through 10/31. Might be worth checking out if you intend to get this drive.

Plextors used to make great drives that could burn anything, and I always used plextors for my personal systems.
Not anymore.
When it comes to backing up your retail CD's, Plextors fail to come though.
Most quality CD's today are protected with SD2 copy protection.
Many drives, including a $20 LiteOn 40x, can back these SD2 titles up fast and problem free.
Plextors can not do SD2.... (haven't been able to for a couple years), which rules out backing up most modern titles.

Some say Plextors are built with better quality, and that is the only edge they have.
After switching to LiteOn's, I see no difference in build quality.
In fact, if the Plextors were so great, why does Newegg always have a ton of them in refurb section?

Plextor denied me a rebate about a year ago based on the price I paid.

I purchased a 16x from Dell and combined with coupons it was about $95. Although, it didn't stipulate a minimum price on the rebate offer, they did reserve their right to deny the rebate at their discretion.

I'll never buy Plextor again! If you're counting on the rebate ...beware your mileage may vary to a much greater degree with Plextor!

THEY DID THAT TO ME! I called Buy.com and told them I would reverse VISA charges since the rebate they were offering from PLEXTOR at their site did not mention a minimum price... they told me to pretty much go to hell. Then, I emailed PLEXTOR customer service and they got me the rebate.

Plextors are no longer the über-burner they once were. Perhaps they still are for SCSI, but I'd say that Lite-On has surpassed them in popularity for IDE. Lite-On's price/performance ratio is so much lower than Plextor's it's not even funny.

I totally agree. I love my last 2 lite-on's (24x, 48x) and given their quality AND outstanding price, the value of the "Plextor-price-premium" has become obsolete.

Does Sam's Club carry a 48x Lite-On drive?

Plextools, Plextor's CDR(W) manager that works only with Plextor drives, is
great and almost makes it worth having a Plextor setup just to use it.
Among the strengths of Plextools is the ability to do verified audio extraction.
You can do the same thing with EAC, but Plextools does if better and faster.

Also, the Plextor 40x SCSI CDrom is surely the best CD drive in existance for
reliable, broadly compatible audio and data extraction.

Is the 40x Plextor CDRW worth $90 when the Lite-On equivalent is $50?
It depends on what you want and what you need.

They have one for about $50 but I couldn't tell you which one it is...it might be a 40x also. I got mine from this thread.

'm not even sure if I would call them the king of SCSI anymore. The last SCSI drive they have made was a 12/10/32S, which I own. The problem is that it's still only a 12x burner and does not support burning of any of these new copy protections. I think that Yamaha and maybe some other companies have released pretty good, and faster, scsi burners. I am actually sick of not being able to burn half the games out there so I am selling my Plextor 12/10/32S in favor of a new LiteOn drive.

Lite-On drives are definitely more bang for the buck, UNLESS what you want to do is back up your Karaoke CD+G collection. I have not seen evidence that the Lite-On drives can do this reliably, or at all with most of the software out there. (Why they don't add this functionality is beyond me)

Plextor drives do this flawlessly, so for those of us that need it, this deal is HOT!

(If someone knows a way to reliably copy CD+G with a Lite-On, please email me and prove me wrong!)

Plextors use to be the king of CD-RW drives but I do not think that they are worth the extra $ over any other one out there. I use to have all Plextor SCSI CD but I do not think that the extra money is worth it when you can just throw away a couple of burners from OM and still be cheaper than a Plextor. I do like the tools that Plextor makes but they are not worth that much money.

Those new Yamaha "SCSI" drives are a scam. They are not true SCSI. They are IDE with an IDE<->SCSI adaptor
fitted to the IDE connector.

A 12x SCSI burner is, amazingly, still a hot item for those who demand/like SCSI. A 12x IDE burner is worth
squat these days. But a 12x SCSI burner still commands a decent price...'cause after 12x all the companies
went with IDE (once burn-proof and its ilk were introduced). I think there may have been a 16x or 20x (true)
SCSI Yamaha drive...

That doesn't sound good. Plus, you have to wonder if there's any latency between the SCSI -> IDE conversion/connection. :(

I used to use all Plextor back in the scsi days

but now.. with free and almost free liteon deals.. whats the point? My liteons are as good if not better than plextors anyday.. at the fraction of the cost.
