Lobotomy, anyone?

"[the] patient would be rendered unconscious by electroshock. [Dr.] Freeman would then take a sharp ice pick-like instrument, insert it above the patient's eyeball through the orbit of the eye, into the frontal lobes of the brain, moving the instrument back and forth. Then he would do the same thing on the other side of the face..."

"Freeman, equal parts physician and showman, became a barnstorming crusader for the procedure. Before his death in 1972, he performed transorbital lobotomies on some 2,500 patients in 23 states..."

Interesting article. That's really screwed up, how his stepmom wanted him to have a lobotomy because she didn't like him. I'm glad I'm alive today and not then...maybe they'd be lobotomizing my crazy ass.

I heard the interview on npr. It was quite the story. I had a friend in Texas years ago that was lobotomized as a child. He was unable to work and was on Social Security, but he was a pretty normal person. He just couldn't stay awake more than three or four hours at a time.

Uniquely American, I might add.

huh? The procedure was invented in Spain, and the inventor was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. Uniquely american my ass. Sure it became the most popular in the US but it was done elsewhere.

I take back the unique part, but still it was mostly done in America. We have some freaky medical types over here.

How the hell did his father ever agree to that?

Anyone proposing to do that to any kids I might have would find me very opposed.
(By "very opposed" I mean they wold have to get through a hail of small arms fire and step over my freshly lifeless corpse)

cripes, take a chill pill. moniz was awarded the prize for his techniques. freeman developed a different technique. the operation was done way before the time of moniz by german, tested on animals.

It was common practice back then. We, as a nation, trust our doctors. Perhaps unwisely.
