loaning a friend money :UPDATE:

My friend Ashley just called me. We've been friends for about 4 years now. She's never been a gold digger, really sweet, etc.

She recently moved from STL (where i am) to Florida to be with her boyfriend.

She just called, said she's in SC (family there) because her boyfriend beat her up and she bailed, as in ran for her life, jumped in her car and left.

Her dog was still at the house apparently, and her bf texted her saying he kicked the dog outside on its own. so she called the City's dog pound (humane society), and they went and got the dog.

She was told since it's a big pit, she needs to come pick it up within 72 hours "or else".

They want $150 for their fees.

She's broke, and called me crying. She wants to borrow $200 so she has the money and gas money to drive back down there and pick up the dog. I told her I didn't have it, but my car payment wasnt due until the 15th and if she could pay me back before then, that i would send it western union. She said that she's going to be helping her friend's parents out and she will earn more than eough to pay me back by then.

I just said I would send it. She sounded authentically upset. sigh.

EDIT:

Ashley just called, asked when my car payment was due. I said the 15th (taken out of my account). She said she already has $120 of the $150 and works the next two nights and will send it via Western Union On Monday. Oh, and I only sent her $150, not $200 because she said her brother was going to drive her down there and didnt ask for gas money.

cash advance from credit card, or have her paypal money to herself or a friend to give her the money to avoid the outlandish interest that comes with cash advances.

I don't get why anyone would borrow money like this when just about everyone has credit cards... unless she maxed out all her cards, then you probably shouldn't trust her anyways.

I don't see a problem with this if it's true.

How about tacking on a condition with the money like her calling the cops on this c-sucker before you pay up?

Let me know if she doesn't pay, I live in SC. I'm a pretty scary looking guy too

Wow, since when do pounds charge to go get a dog? Here they're desperate to give pets away as they have to put them asleep.

Sounds like a really crappy situation though. She should of just brought the dog with her but guess it was hard in that situation

People suck so hard at money.

yeah, thats a bit ridiculous. how can you even pay to take care of a dog without a few bucks?

lol this is true. Not that hard to save up a few grand to leave in the bank. I have a hard time believing that people have zero money left over after all the bills.

Seems like a small amount of money, though I'm surprised they don't have a credit card to cover this. Yes I know you would have to pay the credit card company, but seems like it would be easy to get the dog out and then figure out how to pay..

why can she not borrow the money from the friends parents against her future earnings if that's legit?

you'll never see that money again IMHO.

If the situation is true I'd do it. While I think she'll want to do her best to pay you back just be prepared that the money may not come by the 15th. If she's in trouble as bad as it sounds like she is I wouldn't be surprised if she couldn't get the money back to you in that time even if she tries her best to do it.

I'm jaded because I live at home and have very few bills but I do my manage my money very closely and save what I can.

Sorry for the the thread derail.

Tell her to ask her parents. You won't get paid back. Broke people stay broke.

Well, she's only 21, and just now kinda growing out of a hippy/stoner girl adolescent life. She moved to Florida to be with her BF and go to school. He was supporting her while she was in school and she was literally dependant on him. Her parent's are deadbeats, so she's lucky they are even letting her live with them until she gets back on her feet.

Why doesn't her bf have any money?

Missed that part, sorry. Bf sounds like a loser, she should get rid of him.

But at any rate, just help her out and write it off. Don't make such a big deal about money, people stress enough about ti already.

I just raped myself paying taxes. I really don't have the money to spend, but I do have cash on hand (which is there to pay bills). So I told her "i have the money, kinda, but its already spoken for; but if you can get it back to me before its due, then id be happy to help"

Just pay your bills late. I'd rather catch trouble from a bill collector than lose a friend.

Never lend money to a friend. Give it to her and tell her to never ask you for money again, that it would be nice if she paid you back but it is not a loan. Rarelt does anything good come from lending money to friends.

Well that's in the eye of the loaner.

If money is not important to you, you will just give it and don't ask. It's people like you who b!tch and moan "I wants my money!" over a few bucks - there are more important things in life than money.
