I have a Toshiba Portege 3440CT that I am trying to install Windows 98 onto, and I have a Sony PCGA-CD51/A PCMCIA CD-ROM that I want to use to install Windows from, but I can't seem to get the device recognized. I created a boot up disk off of this: http://www.cdrom-drivers.com/drivers/34/34124.htm, but it still failes to find the device. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Did you set the PCMCIA to 16-bit CARD BUS (not Auto-Selected or PCIC Compatible)
in the BIOS? (to get into the Bios Hold ESC key while powering up, then F1)

Those DOS drivers are 16-bit only.

Do you have it plugged in to the lower slot?
(Toshiba's are very picky with 16-bit PCMCIA cards)

Is there a reason for not using the DVD/CD ROM?
It may only be 4X but it still will get the job done.

I tried doing this on another laptop a long time ago. I think i ended up transfering all the files to the laptop using a cross over cable. it was slow and unfun.

it isn't worth the agony...if i wuz u, i would get one of those 2.5" notebook ide to 3.5" desktop ide adaptors, pull the drive from the notebook, use the adaptor, plug it into the desktop, format it, sys it, and copy the cab files back to the drive, put it back inthe notebook, turn it on, it will boot to a dos prompt, and run setup from there.
