Putting together a computer for the kids. Trying to get win 98 to load onto this 400mb hard drive.
Keep getting this cdr101: not ready reading drive e error
This is driving me crazy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

using a win 98 start up disc I fdisk the drive and then format it. Boot the computer with the start up disk the cd rom driver loads but I get this cdr101 message when I try to run the upgrade disk.
any ideas?

ok, check for scratches on the cd, also check to make sure the drive itself is still working (try it in another computer)

Is it just me or is he trying to install an upgrade version of 98? Your thread title says one thing but your post doesn't mention it. Win 98 looks for (and has to find) a copy of a previous install, whether its 98, 95 or 3.1 Don't know if I helped at all, but I hope I did. 🙂
LUCK!!!

rorpan,
I would suggest, after the format, to copy the win98 folder off of the cd, to the hard drive. Just the contents of the win98 folder though, not any of the sub-directories (it'll consist mostly *.cab files). Then just run setup.exe from your hard drive (probably c:\win98\setup) and it should install without a hitch. In fact it won't prompt you to use the Windows 98 CD ever again, it will automatically look at the directory on your hard drive you installed from.

Just FYI igiveup,
Windows doesn't know if you are using an upgrade cd. When you enter the registration key, the code you give it tells it. Hence, if you have the upgrade CD, it will install the full version, with no problems, permitting you have a full version CD-Key.

igiveup, You can install using the upgrade disk. During the install it will ask you to insert a prev Windows cd to check.

OOPS did not see that you said that already afropick.

After you format, boot into DOS with cdrom support and try to copy the WIN98 folder to the C drive. What I do is make the C:/windows/system drive and copy the contents of the win98 folder over from the cd and then run setup from the C:/windows/system folder.

If you cant copy the Win98 folder to the hard drive then something is wrong with your cd.
