Loading SATA drivers into WinXP AFTER install

GOT IT!

I have a new SATA drive for my K8V SE Deluxe. The SATA drivers are not built into Windows, so the only way to get Windows to recognize the drive is to load the drivers during installation.

My question is, how can I load the drivers into Windows without re-installing? Nothing is broken within the device manager, and damned if I can find anything on the net about adding them at this point.

Since you didn't specify I am going to assume you're referring to a hard drive and you are using it as a slave to your existing OS drive. Connect the HDD, enable SATA in the bios and install the SATA driver in Windows. You can then go to administrative tools > disk mgmt. > initialize the disk and proceed to partition & format.

It's not clear what you are trying to do. It SOUNDS like you are trying to add a second hard drive to a working XP system?

If so:

You don't actually add a driver for a SATA drive. You are adding a driver for a SATA disk controller.

In XP's Device Manager you should see the SATA controller, with a question mark next to it. Locate the SATA controller and update its driver. If Device Manager doesn't see the SATA controller at all, make sure it's enabled in the motherboard BIOS.

Then do what John said to initialize, partition, and format the disk.

If what you are trying to do is to completely re-install XP onto a SATA drive, then you either have to load the SATA controller driver using a floppy disk and the "F6" key during XP Install, or you have to create a modified XP Install CD with the SATA controller driver added in the appropriate folder.

I am trying to make it a slave. I *think* I got it by booting into a windows install (with the drivers slipstreamed in). It is now showing up in Windows now that it is formatted.
