I don't think the computer is all that great. I think you can do better, besides you have to pay tax. I know you have to pay in SB, but SB computers are way cheaper.

why don't you just build it yourself and pocket the $500 in profits that goes to michael dell's pocket?

Wow, talk about a rip-off....

for that price I'd expect:

DVD-RW+RW
1GB of RAM
WinXP PRO.
3 Ghz CPU.
and about $200 less

You want all that for $1500? Tough chance.
Just for comparison, I rigged up something from Newegg

Chieftec aluminum server case with 450w PSU
Optorite 4x DVD+/- DRW
Maxtor 120GB sATA 7200rpm HDD
Buffalo PC3200 2*512MB
NEC 1860NX 18" LCD
P4 3.0c
SBLive! Digital 5.1
Harman-Kardon Champagne 2.1
Connect3D Radeon 9600 Pro
Logitech Cordless Elite Duo
Microsoft Windows XP Home SP1

Subtotal $2,045.99
Shipping $40.00

+ applicable tax for CA residents
- $20 MIR for the Logitech

And this machine is still short of all Microsoft applications the Dell PC comes with. Granted, if yon don't want the programs it's your decision not to pay for them, but a sample system like you said (it's faster than the Dell, but also $300 more) cannot really be configured yourself for $1500.

I like assembling my own system too, but that doesn't mean prepackaged systems are crap.

What good is GeForce MX graphics on a canterwood? If you built this your self, you could get an ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 128mb, PC-3500 RAM, SATA HDD for the same price!

er, this is definitley not cutting edge technology. It's really not even a good deal for a prebuilt one. The ones in the circuit city ads even sound better than this.

I do not know what you guys are smoking, but if you go and configure this system at Dell sb it comes out to about $2000+ even with the current $150 of the 18" screen

I don't know. I just configured it exactly how the Costco system is and it came out to $1787 with free shipping. The only confusion was whether was with the free extra year of warranty. All together, the SB system costs $1925 including tax. The Costco system costs $1887 including CA tax and shipping. So $38 less from Costco.

Ok.. I just speced better on newegg without the LCD (which you can get easily for sub $500 on Dell SB Deal)

P4 2.6 ghz HT
MSI 875P Neo-LSR
Buffalo PC3200 256 mb x 2 stick (Winbound chipset :D ) (Integrated LAN + Audio)
Sapphire 9000 64mb with DVI + TV-out
SB Audigy OEM
Western Digital 120 GB JB
Decent V.92 Modem
Logitech Z-640 Speakers
Logitech MX Duo
Artec 16x DVD (Black available)
Lite-On 52x CDRW (Black available)
XP Pro OEM with SP 1

All in a Nice Black Antec Sonata Case w/ 380 watt Antec PSU
$ 1,198.98 shipped to GA with Fedex (CA ppl need to add their own tax)

That leaves you about $500 for that 18" LCD and junk software. Also, if you don't live in CA, you save taxes (About $ 72 here in GA for 6% tax ). So, This is pretty cold deal.

If you put together a comp based only on anandtech deals, you would be able to get a computer (with the lcd and all) for 500 less than this...this is pretty cold unless you need the computer RIGHT NOW...and even then you can prob. find a better deal shopping around at compusa or frys or something
