Can anyone tell me if my clouding is bad enough to warrant a return? These pictures are from a totally dark room, and i couldnt really get any good perfect ones because of the darkness, but i think they illustrate my flashlighting well.

I am not typically bothered by flashlighting, just curious if i should return or not (have a couple weeks left):

they go in order from 0,3,5,7,10 backlight respectively. Sorry for the image quality. Also, it seems odd that when watching i usually see the top left corner as the worse, these images show otherwise (guess its just the outline that is made).

Unfortunately it's pretty hard to get a LCD with perfectly even backlighting these days. There's always going to be some degree of unevenness if you crank the backlight up and look at a black screen in a dark room. Your shots also look off-angle which can pronounce clouding.

I'd say leave the backlight at 5 or below and see if you notice it during normal viewing. Also, calibrating the set tends to mask out clouding for normal viewing. If after all that during credits and night scenes you're still noticing clouding by all means take it back. Keep in mind though you'll be rolling the dice on a new set, which could have worse clouding, dead pixels, etc.

What's your backlight at? Samsungs generally calibrate well with a backlight at 3 - 5. If you have it cranked above that and see clouding it's a simple fix of turning it down. I have mine at 4 and the panel is completely uniform. I did crank it up to 10 just to check when I got it, didn't notice any clouding but like all LCDs the lighting didn't seem 100% uniform like a CRT. One big flaw with LCD IMO, especially the larger panels.

I did return my previous Samsung for clouding (pic) but even on that model the clouding disappeared with the backlight at 5. If this is really bothering you, you may want to consider going plasma.

If you think it looks bad and they'll take it back, return it.
Just be ready to possibly go through this again with the next one.

I think you answered your own question right there. During operation even very dark operation it is not noticeable, so I would say it is not a real problem. I don't consider an LCD faulty if once calibrated the image looks perfectly fine during *all* normal use. Cranking up the backlight and showing an all black background is not normal use to me. If it was, I think every LCD would need to be returned.

Oddly enough, it seems like the clouding has gotten a bit better. I'll take new pics about a week before the return deadline.

Thanks guys.

Update: here is the "worse" (lol) picture i could find out of the few i took...it's set to dynamic mode with backlight 10. I took it with ISO 800 and no flash, if i recall correctly. Any opinions on whether i should return or not? I have a few more days.

Will i ever be able to get one that is perfect, or at least better than that? Is it even worth trying? I wish i could find a pic of a really bad one.

Well, if the lot of your TV viewing consists of watching black screens in a pitch black room with the backlight at 10 and your eyes are at ISO 800 sensitivity -- by all means return it :D

But seriously, if it bothers you return it. If not keep it. There's always going to be something to nitpick about with a new set. Eventually you realize it's just a TV can the OCD nitpicking dissipates (hopefully).

If you want to see bad examples of clouding just check out the XBR link at AVS Shawn posted.

Yeah, i guess you are right. its driving me fucking nuts...the thing i dont understand is, is there such a thing as an LCD tv with NO clouding? Some people say they dont have it, but the vast majority do. Just dont know if it'd be worth an exchange.

Questions if/before i exchange:

1)Is the chance high that i would get one with dead/stuck pixels? That would drive me nuts way worse than clouding.

2)Is there such thing as a set without this issue at all, or do people just not notice it?

3)Are returns at amazon easy? What if i get the problem again?

4)Can anyone post pictures of their set that does NOT have this problem?

It's not really too noticeable in movies/games, other than dark transition scenes, but it drives me nuts...i enjoy the backlight reasonable high. Its not very noticeable with the black bars. The top left is actually the worse IMHO. Itsa lmost as if the no signal screen is like, not being provided with black color, where as the other scenes are, so it's kind of not an issue.

AHH! thanks for helping me with this guys.

My sony doesn't have clouding but it does have 2 suck pixels One at the top right that's a dark color so it doesn't bother me much, but the other is bright white and in the lower center of the screen and it drives me crazy. I can't see it from a normal viewing distance but when I walk by my eye goes right to the dead pixel and it drives me crazy. I don't know if you will get one with any dead or stuck pixels but if you do you'll be sorry.

Amazon is really good about exchanges. If you have a problem they are usually glad to help you out. Plus the white glove service they use to deliver sets is great.

I had my previous set for over two months and just up and decided I didn't like it. I called Amazon and explained I was not happy with the set and if it was possible to exchange for the newer Samsung model even though I was over 30-days. The guy put me on hold for five minutes to talk to a supervisor and came back on and said it was no problem being I've been shopped there for over 10 years :) He also waved the return shipping charges. YMMV.

I'm really pissed that they have to charge tax in NY now. Thinking of getting a 60" Kuro when I move and/or a projector but the tax would kill me :(

Maybe, but for me, personally, this is way too much money for me to not get what i expected. And any idiot who watches this would notice it, especially during letterboxed movies...i thought black was supposed to be black, not white. Guess i was wrong.

Maybe you should wait for the new Sony/Samsung LED LCDs to come out or buy a Pioneer Kuro.
