It's not your fault, you have just gotten used to poor quality ingredients and a lack of fresh produce due to your geographic handicap.
White Castle sucks and it's great once a year as nostalgia. But we do have the White Mana burger in Hackensack.

I do like In n Out. I think the fries are just ok but nice when done animal style. The burgers are what I like. A double double is tasty, but I could use a third patty for a better meat to bread and toppings ratio. A single burger at In n Out is pointless. Where's the beef?

I'll always stop at an In n Out if I'm in the West. But we have so many burger joints around here that are just better than all the chains. With five guys and shake shack being the best chains.

Then you can order a 3x3 :p
I've never been, but there's one near where I'll be staying in CA later this year, so I'll finally try it (and I think my expectations are set accordingly)

Ugg, animal style anything is awful. I hate grilled onions (like raw), so that might be why I dislike it so much. :) In 'n Out is fine, their main claim to fame is price/performance. But the one near me is $5.35 for a double double now, so that kind of went out the window. Their fries are only good well done for about 5 minutes. Once they cool off they are trash.

In & Out makes a pretty good fast-food burger which isn't saying a whole lot in the world of burgers overall. Wendy's is damn close to as good despite all the hype and Five Guys blows them away for a couple examples. (5 Guys = borderline is not "fast food" to be fair)

Frankly the last time I had any fast-food burger was over a year ago now and it was pretty dang nasty compared to a "real" restaurant or especially to the burgers I make at home.

That sounds like... most fast food fries, TBH.

Five Guys is twice the money as In'N'Out :(
Not that I'm arguing, I just had Five Guys last weekend and it was great, we have a local place where I'm still trying to figure out whether they're better, or Five Guys, but the fact that it's a contest at all is nice.

That's why I said 5 Guys was borderline fast-food.... too expensive.

I like the idea of 5 guys where you can put anything you want on your burger. But the actual product is really rather poor. Five Guys Tagline: "Here, Have 40lbs of fries to make up for this mediocre burger."

That's true of pretty much all fast-food style burgers/burger-places only they just give you a normal amount of fries. (and charge less!)

God-forbid you want even a trace of pink in your burger even most "sit-down" places these days will insist on "medium" at the least.

I prefer to live dangerously myself and thus take my burgers rare! ;)

Gross. Ground meat should be all dead, not mostly dead.

It's consistently one of the best burgers available across the country, edged out by Shake Shack.
Are there better burgers around? Yes. Consistent and available nation-wide? Gonna need to know who you think is better.

I've yet to get sick from it ever and have been eating rare/medium-rare burgers for my entire adult life. (although I am pretty picky about where I get my ground meat)

Considering what human-beings are fully capable of eating and being just fine, rare burgers are pretty tame lol.... and if you like your steak rare then burgers will taste better that way too!

It's not on the menu but you can order it. Just say you want a 3x3 burger.

Even slightly warm they are trash. They must be piping hot, fresh from the fryer, well done otherwise they taste terrible. In 'n Out fries are cooked wrong (only fried once), so you need to treat them special.

Five Guys, while way too expensive, cooks their fries correctly so they are still edible when cold.

It actually IS possible to reheat fries and have them taste good it they are made of real potatoes like 5 Guys not extruded potato-dough crap like McDonalds.

Best bet is a deep-fryer/air-fryer or some light oil in a skillet.

I guess we differ there, I don't care for 5G fries cold. They do re-heat nicely in a convection toaster oven or air fryer though. And they're better when cooked well done too.

Being available nationwide basically implies it's going to be mediocre.

I didn't say they were good cold, just edible. :)

Yep, I guess we just don't agree, both 5G and Shake Shack make a tasty burger, definitely surpassing "mediocre".

Never had Shake Shack. Nearest one is like an hour away at the Valley Fair mall in San Jose. But I'd bet just about anything it won't be as good as In-N-Out. Reason In-N-Out is so good is because they pay the staff very well and keep the menu simple with quality ingredients. I think they may sprinkle some Jesus dust on the burgers as well.

I usually eat some kind of protein and vegetable(s). Occasionally I'll have a starch like potatoes, pasta, or rice with it. Once a week I go full Italian and make Bolognese sauce and rotini or ziti and garlic bread. Maybe pizza once a week too.

five guys packages the burger incorrectly (foil wtf) and doesn't season the beef at all so the burger part is kinda bad. in-n-out's burger is better (and doesn't cost $15). but the fries suck. they must know the fries suck.

Well, soon I'll be able to judge your assessment, but I find it an unlikely prospect that In'N'Out is better than 5G. Dick's out here pays the staff well and has a simple menu, and I enjoy it, but it's definitely not as good (but the burgers are also 1/4 the price of 5G, and 1/2 of In'N'Out)

5G has not yet passed the $11 mark for a burger here.

Shake Shack just has superior ingredients. The blend of three beef cuts they use for the burger is excellent. Everybody else uses some slight variation of the standard 80/20 Chuck maybe some do sirloin burgers but, shake shack has the blend that changes the game.

While I'm not a huge fan of crinkle cuts, shake shack uses gold potatoes which I love as french fries. That's what the Belgians make frites out of.
