Sony and Microsoft Trade Online Blows
26-AUG-02
Tomorrow, August 27, marks the beginning of a new age in console gaming: the age of online. A new age, that is, if you forget about the Sega Dreamcast, which came with a 56K modem for online play way back in 1999. It's so tough to remember that sometimes.
If you happen to live around San Francisco, Sony is holding a launch party at the PlayStation Store inside the Metreon downtown tomorrow morning to commemorate the launch of their PS2 online service. You'll get to try out SOCOM, NFL GameDay 2003 and Twisted Metal: Black Online at the event for free; Sony's also planning to hold a few cross-country online tournaments onsite. Although the event's open to the public, SCE says there'll be a mere 250 network adaptors available, so you'd best arrive early if you plan to buy the $40 accessory. The doors open at 9 AM.
Of course, Microsoft is not taking this launch lying down. Their PR firm sent us a "PS2 Online Starter Kit" today that includes what they think would be some very helpful accessories for the PS2 online lifestyle. Here's what the starter kit contains:
An "online password reminder pad" to help gamers keep track of the different logins and passwords they'll need for every game
A "56K download assistant" (a ball and paddle) to help pass the time during downloads
An "online cross-games friends list" (a cheap address book) to help you keep track of online friends ("With the PlayStation 2, finding your friends online is a game in itself," says Microsoft's press release)
An "online voice communicator" (a phone card) for those PS2 games that don't have voice support
An "online short-range voice communication system" (two cups and a string) to talk with your friends free of charge
And finally, some ATM deposit envelopes for all the money you'll need to enjoy the PS2 service
The box was even packed in some shredded-up paper that had the phrase "AOL-Real Media-Broadband Revolution-2001 Launch-Broken Promises" printed on it repeatedly. Cruel, man, cruel. We look forward to an equally snippy package from Sony outlining Xbox Live's faults sometime later this fall.
