MacGyver he's not.

A Bay Shore man was arrested Saturday morning after booby-trapping his apartment door with a crutch, an elastic cord and a large knife, Suffolk police said.

Eric Stetz, of Brook Avenue, was charged with reckless endangerment after the building superintendent discovered the ready-to-stab device while trying to open Stetz's door Thursday, police said.

The superintendent and a Verizon agent had come to Stetz's home for a visit the super had warned Stetz would be necessary, police said. When their knocks went unanswered -- Stetz was not home -- the super went to open the door, felt resistance and found the rigged contraption, police said.

Stetz, 44, was released on bail, police said. He could not be immediately reached for comment.

Stetz was not charged in connection with a similar booby trap installed on a bedroom door in the apartment, said Sgt. Kevin Beyrer of the Third Precinct.

Stetz's mother, Freda Stetz, said her son had rigged the device with a steak knife to protect himself from squatters who had taken up residence in the building.

"It made him paranoid," his mother, 75, of East Farmingdale, said of the squatters. "He was afraid they would break in."

He lives alone. "It was a stupid thing to do," Freda Stetz said, "and he'll never do it again."

When he signed the contract for his apt. did it say he couldn't make a home-made security system? So if I put a steak knife blade up on my sofa would I get charged for reckless endangerment if the cops busted in and decided to sit on my sofa?
Sounds like he had a reasonable reason for making it.

iirc, this is against the law from coast to coast. the last thing a firefighter needs when entering a burning building trying to save lives is a wolf trap or a fucking knife in the eye.

An apartment building is one thing... but if I wanted to build one of those in a house that I owned, the law could burn in hell. There's no way I'd let the government tell me I couldn't defend my home the way I saw fit...

So the right to bear arms doesn't extend to the steak knives now? WTF?

Well, since a steak knife is not a bear arm, then obviously, no. :D

I think it varies by location actually - I'm pretty sure that I'm allowed to set boobie traps, but I have to be within the residence while they are armed.
