following on from my divx question in the other forum...

didn't realise projectors were relatively cheap now. About £500.

How about hooking up something like an nforce 2 board (good onboard video/sound) , to a nice size HDD and a decent DVD RW drive, and putting the output of this through a projector.

Doesn't even need a case. Just a mbd with the right drives & psu attached to it.

Result is a player that can read anything, looks novel, super powerful software for playback purposes (xp), and a screen the size of my living room wall.

?

(how loud are projectors these days?)

I took some quick pics with my crappy camera of my projector in action with links in my sig below (The Dorm Theater)

If you get a nice projector and then use a good way to connect to the projector (I'm using DVI to Component) then you can have a really nice setup.

It depends on the projector for loudness. I have a fairly loud model (Infocus 4805) but it's still pretty quiet if you ask me, especially since I have it above and in back of me when I'm watching it.

projector central has some nice info and screen size calculators on a lot of projectors.

AVSforum is also another great place to look.

I got a deal on my 4805, got it for $999 with a 76" screen. There are some really nice deals for budget projectors now and I think it's an excellent option if you want a huge image. Movies are amazing. The only downside is that some of the budget models have resolutions that aren't so hot. Mine is EDTV so movies look great (DVDs are EDTV) and games look really good too, but text is not the best.

If you get one that's either higher resolution (true HD) or one that's designed for office use, you can get clearer text. I wouldn't go with an office one though if you're trying to get the best quality motion video out of it.

There are a lot of choices. Some good budget companies are Infocus, Benq, Sanyo, Panasonic.... there's others too.

If you have the room for it (one that's fairly dark or that can be made fairly dark) then projecotrs can be a great option.
