Living/working in Japan as a foreigner

I have a life goal of learning another language while being immersed in the culture. Figure it'll take 4-5 years. Planning to start before I hit 30. Probably going to do it in Japan, China, or Korea.

I'll have enough assets to live for 4-5 years without income when I do this. The question is, what do I do *after*?

I haven't decided exactly how I'll spend the time, other than that I'll be taking language courses/private tutoring and being in as many social situations as possible. I'd also continue with creative pursuits like music and dancing. Maybe I'd even formally try to get a university degree or diploma while learning the language.

But whatever I do with my time, the question I think will haunt me is what I'll do *after*.

Right now I have a successful technology career. I'll probably want to return to that in some form.

In my mind, the options are:
1) Start a business
2) Go back to North American and look for work with a big gap in my resume
3) Stay where I am (China/Korea/Japan), attempt to become a permenent resident, look for work there. If I meet my goals I'll be fluent in the language at this point anyway. (4-5 years)

A fourth option I hadn't considered is waiting until a while after 30... say, 40... and trying to permanently retire. And then learning the language would be a retirement activity rather than a hiatus. This seems far fetched. Having enough money to last for a few years is easier.

What do you guys think is the most realistic/intelligent option?

OH, a fifth option is finding a tech company that would let me work overseas for a few years.

e.g. perhaps Sony or a company like that.

I bet my company would definitely let me transfer to Japan if I wanted to since we have some offices there and a lot of the semiconductor and electronic companies use our product. I have too many things attached here to just get up and move.

First, good luck staying more than 90 days without some sort of work supported visa (unless you go in on a student visa, but then you won't be able to earn any money).
Second, have fun trying to get a job in a Japanese company in Japan...they tend to think Americans are fairly stupid compared to themselves.

Ganbattene.

realistically, you need to look into this further...you need a VISA to be there longer then 60, or is it 90 days?

Best method is a work VISA.

country like singapore is more welcoming than others.

your biggest problem is the visa.

got any (korea/japanese/chinese) ladies friends that may interest in a citizenship "swap"?
