When I purchased my IBM PC300 (PIII-450) via mail, I had no idea this was an NLX form factor machine... which did not matter much until i decided I want to buy an AGP VIVO card to capture video ... as it turns out, one needs to buy an 'NLX form factor AGP card' ...!

Question : if I just took a hacksaw to the back of the case, will a regular AGP card fit ? I trust the electrical connector is the same ... is it ??

Appreciate any help / tips / horror stories etc etc

Depends.

Normally most modern video cards won't fit an NLX case, because the PCB is too high.

The cheaper cards like the GeForce MXs might be OK since they use much smaller PCBs, but I highly doubt your VIVO card is going to fit, even if you were to get an SFF bracket.

if you computer has a AGP port, and you are willing to cut away anything on its way, i don't see it matter. The only problem is do you computer has a agp slot.

Some will only use half-size (height) AGP card as intel call for. But unless your case is too small, you can cut it, right?
