I can't take winters anymore, I've lived in Michigan and/or NYC for the past decade and I'm about done. None of my hobbies can be done between December and March (Sportbikes, cars etc.) and I hate, HATE sub-zero temperatures.

How is living in Florida? I've got a buddy in Tampa and I've always been amazed at the weather (OMGZZZ teh palm trees!)...

Also how is the job market down there currently for a Finance professional? (top ibank work experience, master's in Finance from top10 program etc.)

lots of old people in certain areas. The weather is nice (when used to the Northern winters). I'm not sure if it gets boring after 2 weeks. Can you speak spanish?

I'm in the same boat. After graduation I'm determined to blow this place. (michigan)

it sucks

there are jobs down there but they're mediocre at best
most of the ambitious students try to get out of FL and seek bigger cities

I've been seeing a good amount of hedge fund and/or high end real estate jobs and miami has a ton of money management outfits also.

As for big cities, I've lived in nyc for about 2 years and I don't really wanna do that again...

I've gotten used to Michigan having been here nearly 24 years.

That being said, I don't know about Florida, maybe somewhere west and south rather than just south.

More people move in than move out.

There are Gators there and they will eat your babies if you let them.

It's humid

It's just a short swim to Cuba

Good food!

I've been living in Florida since 1990. Spent 8 years in South Florida (suburb of Ft. Lauderdale), 4 years in Gainesville (North Central Florida) for college (Go Gators!) and now have spent the past 6 years in Southwest Florida (Sarasota, just south of Tampa).

To be honest, I prefer this area in Southwest Florida. Its just very laid back here, the climate is great, the people are friendly, there's plenty of things to do year round.

I don't see myself moving from Florida anytime soon, we really like it here.

OP,

I've lived in Central Florida since 1966 so I have some experience. Before I tell you about the place let me say that I am looking to move out of state just because I need a change.

That being said Florida is fine if you like it flat and humid. The weather is fantastic from mid-October through late April. In fact we just had our third strainght day of freezing temps (high 20s) but highs in the 50s and 60s. It's beautiful weather ... so much so my fav time to lay out and tan is February. On the bad side starting in May and going through mid October you have got to like heat and humidity ... and have an air conditioner.

Prices on rent and houses have really dropped her as the credit crunch really hurt Florida real estate. It might be hard finding a good job in finance right now but that's more because of the recession.

Depending upon where you choose to live you may want to learn spanish as there are a LOT of persons that speak it here ... especially from Puerto Rico and Cuba ... with some Mexicans mixed in. You may also want to learn to love country music and monster trucks as we have a LOT of hicks here as well. You have to learn to tolerate the confedrate flag ...

If you are considering the area then fly down and drive around. We have beaches, theme parks, a spaceport and more beaches ... we also have too much heat and humidity, lots of mosquitos, too many Harleys and it's a bit crowded.

Good luck ...

I wasn't a fan. Way too hot. No seasons ("Hurricane Season" doesn't count). Tons of old, retired people...so the job market is great for service jobs. Not so great for professional jobs (at least where I lived). The news is a constant source of entertainment, in a bad way...there's a reason why Florida has it's own icon on fark.

I did love the beaches and the heavy storms.

...actually, to be honest, I would have probably liked Florida fine if I had lived around Tampa, or any other place with some jobs and life. I lived in Vero Beach, and it basically sucked.

Plus about 90% between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami is fucking ghetto. I95 is like a freaking parking lot in rush hour down there. We moved from Ft. Lauderdale to Wellington in 1986 because of the crime increasing...now many parts of West Palm Beach are falling apart.

It really depends the exact neighborhood you live. I don't see too many chaffeurs even driving around Palm Beach though.

I was born and raised in south east FL partly in Palm Beach county and partly in Broward county.

I lived there for 25 years until I couldn't take it anymore and got the hell out of that place.

I think FL is one of those places that to people who don't live there seems very appealing but living there isn't all rainbows and roses.

FL is hot and hotter, it's humid as hell, the Spanish speaking population is out of hand, its so bad that billboards, radio station, announcements over PA systems in stores are all done in English and Spanish. Have you ever gone to a national chain store and found you couldn't communicate with the employees because they don't speak English? People tend to be inconsiderate a-holes since 85% of them that didn't land on a raft on one of the shores of the state came from NYC and brought their attitudes with them along with their lousy driving. Beyond that there are the millions of old people waiting to die and trying to make your life a living hell in the process every time you go to drive anywhere or eat at any restaurant.

They call it "the sunshine state" but it should really be called something more appropriate like "the torrential downpour every afternoon at 3PM state" or "heavens waiting room" (which a lot of people do call it).

Now lets not forget the hurricanes! Have you ever gone through a category 3 hurricane? Not fun, nothing quite like feeling that any moment your roof in your $1,200 a month 1 bedroom apartment is going to be ripped off or coming out after it passes to find your vehicle crushed under a tree, having all the grocery stores, gas stations, traffic lights all without power and or destroyed. Have you ever taken a shower with no hot water for 2 weeks straight because your own city didn't have working power? Have you ever had to wait in line for gas for hours on end just to get to the pump and find out they're out of gas? I'll tell you it's a new level of hell.

I know I sound bitter to it but there are some good qualities about FL. Most of my family still lives there. There is about a 1 month period around April that's usually the nicest weather you could ever hope for. There truly are some beautiful beaches (and women on them ;)), especially down in the Keys. Fishing and aquatic activities are second to none also. That's about it, for my taste.

I do however like the west coast of FL much more, not so crowded, nicer beaches that aren't wrecked year after year from hurricanes like the east coast is.

I will say though that FL is very different from coast to coast and in between. SE FL is nothing like NW FL, central FL is nothing like either coast, etc.. and I wouldn't mind living in St. Augustine, that'd be a cool town to retire to.

This is partly just a rant, there are some great qualities of the area but there are some cons that might not be apparent if you've only ever visited FL.

As Aphex said, Sarasota was nice, at least what little I saw of it when I went there to buy a TV off of him a couple of years ago. :p

FWIW I now live in GA, in a northern suburb of Atlanta and love it. I don't foresee ever leaving this area. We get 4 season but none of them are to the extremes of some other places. It gets as hot as FL at it's peak but it cools off at night unlike FL, it gets in the teens for lows but it rarely snows and it's usually only for a few days before it's back up to 40/50/60f highs.

I've lived in Florida my whole life and can tell you that if you are interested in leaving the cold weather than this is the place. Just the other week I was introduced to someone a buddy of mine met that's from Detroit and he escaped the cold. This was his first winter down here and he's had nothing but praises since he's made the journey south. I live in St. Petersburg, we're surrounded by water. I suggest you find a city that's close to the water, which wouldn't be too hard considering Orlando is the only city in the middle of the state that's worth mentioning.

The summers are nice. It can get hot and humid, but its a lot easier to acclimate yourself to warm weather than go through cold winters. We really only have two seasons: Summer and Fall. For instance, our winter has been on average 75 degrees each day even though we just had a cold front come from the north and bring the temperature down to the 40s in some parts. I'm sure it was colder in northern florida but you get what I'm saying.

If you like being outdoors then go for it. It seems like the only reason why people go outside in the winter is to drive from one place to another. No matter what time of year you can always go outside and do something. We still grill out on the porch 3 nights a week and its the middle of January.

I can really only speak for the culture based on what I've experienced. There are older people, but the stereotypical bad driving and what not doesn't affect every day of your life. Every once and a while you notice slow shopping lanes or a ghost driver with big knuckles on the wheel with a blinker on in the fast lane. Don't look too far into all of that. We've got sports teams all over the place and as long as you are in a good sized city you aren't going to die from mosquitos. Grass does grow fast down here, you'll probably never see a gator unless you are actively looking for one in the lakes somewhere, lizards are harmless (and awesome imo), I haven't seen anything other than a typical garden snake in the wild, flooding is only within a mile or so of the coast line.

The on prevalent thing on that list is Hurricanes. They are very common because of how early we are warned. We may see up to three hurricanes in the Atlantic or Caribbean heading our way. Some hit us, some don't. Some are big, some are not. It's definitely important to make sure you are aware that there is nothing you can do about a hurricane coming your way and if you get fucked up in it its your fault; you had about 2 weeks notice, 72 hours notice that it's definitely hitting you.

But imo Florida definitely beats the cold. 2 weeks is all I spend in the winter past Alabama. That's for my ski trip. I've never once shoveled or blown snow and I never will.

Property tax is high but keep in mind we don't have an income tax here. That's good times.

I love living in Orlando. Lots of stuff to do, great food, get most of the good concerts, some good high tech jobs (simulations), multiple awesome beaches within an hour drive and a large University (UCF).
