Yes. You would need to apply for a 'Re-entry Permit' through your local INS office. Also, look through the INS website for relevent information.

Yes that is .. sortof easy. Most countries require you to get a working license first and then have to work for some time there. Then you can apply for a citizenship, some countries allow dual recident and some dont.

Visiting the US is easy since you will just be a tourist and can stay up to a month there or something like that.

What country are you thinking of going to?

What about taxes and working in another country? Someone just told me that there used to be a tax loophole that if one remained out of the country for 18 months, the federal taxes would be refunded. That loophole has probably long since been closed, no? According to this guy, you could not even come back to the States to visit during the 18 mos.

I only know how it is here, think it is like it worldwide. A tourist visa only lasts 6 months, after that you are deported and you are not allowed to work there during that time.

I am not up on current laws but I did live overseas for 5 years some time ago. You can be tax exempt, provided you don't work for a US Gov't agency, if you stay out of the USA for 510 days out of any 18 month period. I could usually come back for 30-35 days in the 18 months. Also, the 18 months can overlap so once you got the 18 months you are home free from then on. As far as I know this is still current.

A great many countries will allow a USA citizen to visit visa free. It is still a good idea to have a passport as returning is so much easier. As long as you have passage out of their country (roundtrip ticket) you can stay for 30 days easy. While there you can go to immigration and get an extension sometimes for a year. Just prove to them you are able to provide for yourself and won't become a welfare case. As the year ends go back and get another extension if you want. It varies country to country.
