I'm moving into an apartment with friends.
There is one room 11x11 (the single)
another room 12x12 (the double)

two people are living in the double and one is living in the single.
The total cost is $1675 for the apartment.

How should we split the cost? What is fair?

The person that gets the single room should pay 1.5 times what one person that stays in the double-room pays

hey kenji, i'm in the same situation as you are. 2-room apartment (19X13, 13X12), and we're splitting it up by square footage.

total up the square footage, and divide the double in half (half of the larger room per person). personal square footage/total square footage = how much % of the bill goes to you.

i actually got kinda slanted on mines.. it's $1380 for the apartment, and i (single) pay $620. it's not quite exactly sqaure footage based, (i'm supposed to pay $600) and also the closet comes into my room, so it's really 13X11... but... i was willing to let it slide because i'm getting my own room. since i pay more they also let me have a parking permit (2 permits per apartment)

If you use the 1.5 times more for you than your room mate in the doubles, it comes up to 480 each for em and 715 for you...

well it was exactly 478.57 and 717.85 respectively.....

the bottom line is that its up to you and your roommates...

That is flawed since you also need to allocate cost of the common areas, i.e., living room.

Here is what my old roommate and I did.

1 Bedroom apartment: bedroom 12x16 and living room was 24x12.
We made a second bedroom in the living room that was 11x12 and walled it off.
So I had a 12x16 and he had a 11x12. Total cost of apartment was 2,525 + 200(utilities).

Putting up the wall cost us 1,000 so we split that 50/50.

12x16 room paid: 1,325 + 100 utilities
12x11 room paid: 1,200 + 100 utilities

The reason why he agreed to pay so much is because I spent over 10,000 furnishing the apartment - living room and kitchen. This was complementary to his preferences of not spending an extra dime on the apartment since he was a consultant and was never in the apartment.

These days I have a real 2 bedroom and it only costs $2,950... which reminds me, I need to pay rent.

just do it by square footage, its the fairest

the two people in the double are getting 72 of the total 265 sq feet so they each pay 27% of the rent.

so double 1: 27%
double 2: 27%
single: 46%

I'm going to move into a 3-bedroom-2-bathroom apt and everyone gets their own room but obviously one room is bigger than the other two and has its own bathroom. I'm getting the bigger room but I am willing to share the bathroom because the other bathroom is reserved for the girl. What's up with women not wanting to share their bathrooms? Anyways, the rent breakdown is 625, 550, 550.

hehe Kenji... where'd you get a place? I hear the rent in Santa Cruz went up a lot... last year I had a place down near the harbour on 7th, 3 blocks away from the beach... a 2br 1ba house fully furnished for $1600 including utilities. One room was a 10x10, the other was like a 10x7 =\ One suggestion is to look at the housing rates online- since the rooms seem about the same size, use the dingle rate and the single rate and adjust accordingly. That's all I can think of.
