Living in a dorm. Should I get a long distance service?

My roommate and I just got our phone set up but we don't have long distance. This means that I can't page my friend or call her cellphone even though she's on the same campus. Her pager and cellphone both have area codes from our hometown about 3 hours away. I can't call home either unless I use a phone card or use one of the 10-10 services. Which long distance phone companies do you guys suggest? Sprint looks pretty good. The Spring Anytime 7 cents Online plan looks like it would fit what my roommate and I need (he uses the phone a lot more than I do). Thanks.

get prepaid phone cards at sams , they are better and cheaper than any deal they will throw at you
the only drawback is having to dial the 1800 number everytime u want to call long distance if you can put
up with that i would definitely get calling cards.

I just use AIM, and if I absolutly NEED to make a long-distance phone call (I think I did it once last year), I use a calling card.

Don't sign up for long distance and pay the outrageous monthly charges, taxes, fees, hidden costs, etc. Just BigZoo.com you can recharge your account online, call domestically for as low as 2.9 cents per minute. People will whine that during peak hours BigZoo's toll free access number is busy, well that's what a redial button is for! Press redial a few times and you'll get right through.

$1.74 gets you 60 minutes talk time, you can't beat that with the level of service and features that BigZoo offers.

Just program the 1800# into your speed-dialing, along with your pin #.

I guess I'll get a phone card then. This is what I planned to do at first but my roommate seems to talk a lot on the phone. I wouldn't mind paying the extra few bucks a month especially if i get the convenience of not needing to enter the extra 1800 number.

Just program the 1800# into your speed-dialing, along with your pin #.

That's what I do.

Memory 1 - dials BigZoo.com
Memory 2 - dials my PIN

Takes a whopping 2 seconds.

if you do that its better to get the 500 or 1000 minute cards so you do not have to
reprogram often

I suggest getting a Cell Phone. I have Cingular and despite the bad news about them I get consistent service. Good Prices, you get a cell phone, and nights and weekends, you get FREe LONG DISTANCE, not even airtime charges. I don't even know why I have my apartment phone hooked up.

If you make a lot of long distance calls, consider a cell phone. A lot of people at the USAF dorms get SprintPCS. No contract, just the monthly plan with free nationwide long distance. The monthly cost is less than getting several phone cards.
