I just saw this HBO special. For those that didn't see it, it's about how families in the southern states take their children and apply makeup, hair styling, fancy dress and train them to do talent performances...from the age of 0 to 7 years, starting as early as 3 weeks old.

Personally, I find this disturbing. The financial strain alone is enough to cause concern. The pressure put on these kids to do well can't be healthy. I'm at a loss for words when I try to think of ways this is so totally messed up.

If you saw it, do you feel the same way? Is it alright to take innocent children and turn them into beauty queens before they can think for themselves? I don't think it is.

Before we get off on a redneck bashing thread, this also happens in places other than "the south."

I cannot stand the practice, and I cannot believe that people do this to their children, turning them into sex objects before the poor kid can even spell sex. Jon Benet Ramsey is a perfect example, if you see the tapes of her in a pageant, she looks like a miniature 20 year old

highly disturbing and sickening. what purpose this serves other than for the corruption of children is beyond me.

Yeah, I remember one time I went to that BIG mall down in So Cal (forget its name), and most of these stores were essentially for people who drive Lexuses, Mercedes, etc. There was this kids store, which only sold kiddie sized clothes, specifically little girls, and they had stuff that would make people dressed for the Oscars shameful. I'm talking about expensive jewelry and clothes..there were dresses and outfits for $2000! This was a kids *only* store, and there were clothes that the average adult wouldn't dare buy. And given that they're young, these outfits wouldn't last for more than a year.

I was quite disturbed looking at those price tags..

I was gonna say Jon Benet wasn't from the "southern states", but I see Sluggo already mentioned it. It is a disgusting thing IMO. My mother-in-law wanted to get my daughter's ears pierced---she's only 2 1/2, for god's sake. I told her that my daughter can get her ears pierced when SHE wants to, not when my m-i-l does.

Of course, I didn't mean for this to be a souther bashing thread or anything like that. The special said thats where these things were held. I'm sure they go on in other places. People are screwed up all over the world.
