"Live site" idea

How good would a site be where people would sign on, enter their zip code, and see other people on the site within 30 miles of them RIGHT then and there, and no one else? Kind of like a virtual "town". Is this idea begging for legal problems?

well, considering the idea would logicaly require that someone else be on the server at the same time, on an online forum no less, I'm guess it's not very practical; esp. if it's real-time only.

let's put it another way - I think the idea would work only on a very populated server with many, many members.

legal problems
why would you want to see other ppl near you anyway?
you could do the samethign on laavlife.com, okcupid.com, match.com, and MYSPACE.COM
so what are you trying to do

🙂 I could use geocoder service... it would be free and VERY simple.

So what would you forsee happening when you sign on and see that there are 30 people that are in your area?

In other words, what, if any, type of interactivity would there be?

I'm gonna start it with peoplewholiveclose.com 🙂 Unless there's some other ideas for names?

It would be a very simple site... mostly text based. Username and password of course, or maybe not required? Maybe just zip code to begin?

You could chat, privately or in a group, off line messages maybe? Maybe searching by interest? I dunno, I'd love to keep it simple. It would basically be a VERY SIMPLE site for people to just meet other people in their area.

Unless .. hmmm... you could post messages, and only people within 50 miles of you saw them and replied, and vice versa.... but the live thing sounds better.

Agreed.... something like egeo.com or something like that...

I really want to do this. A nice and simple site, you enter your zip, you agree to the disclaimer, and you're in.....

No login? You could be just asking for trouble/abuse...

Could use google maps for display. Like, you can see small portraits of the people around you as a marker on their location. I guess if people have a problem with others knowing where they are they don't have to go there.

You'd need many servers to do it all across the US though.

Very good idea!

I was also thinking of geocoder, to see how far away people were from you. And I was also thinking that the limit would be five miles... so as in, if someone is as close as five miles to you, all it would say would be "5 miles or less". That way, people wouldn't get freaked out if it was like "This person is 600 feet from you."

If I can think of a good name, something like geounion.com (which I like, any votes?), I can write the site in a couple weeks... its not that hard!

This already exists, I believe. I can't remember the name of it, but I think "Cycling" or "cycle" was in the name...I think it was posted on digg.com fairly recently.

Sorry, try again. 🙂

I looked all over digg.com for it and I couldn't find it.
