So I finally got through to a human at the unemployment agency. Its been over 3 weeks since I filed my claim and I hadn't heard anything from them. The lady that answered the phone confirmed they had received all my information and faxes. That's good news. Then I made the mistake of asking about the status of my claim:

"Sir, we are 7 weeks out right now. Claims aren't even looked at before then."

7 weeks? I didn't have it in me to ask how long it takes them to approve a claim and then how long after that to get a check.

FUCK

Go into debt and pay it off when you get the checks?

This is not a good idea, unless of course the alternative is starvation.

No kidding, charging things on credit cards when you know you cant (or will not) pay it back is fraud. 🙁

However unemployment is considered income once you start getting it, but you are walking a fine line.

Don't the 'experts' say it's a good idea to save an emergency fund of 3 to 6 months of living expenses? With the current jobs market, better to have at least 6 months!

took me a little less than a month to get my first payment. I live in PA though.

It's not fraud. It's stupidity. But when it's all you've got...

In any event, time to head to Social Services and file for food stamps and TANF.

Florida makes you wait a week where you get nothing, but after that week, and the next one you get a check the following wednesday or so. So - file on monday, get approved during the week - your waiting week is the following - then after that is a claimable week. And you are paid by wednesday, so about 3 weeks max .

I'm so glad I left Michigan - the land where industry forgot.
