Been there, done that. I lived in the ghetto to save $400-500 on rent. I checked everything: crime map, ensure place as gated, easy access to freeway during rush hours, attentive management, etc.

Anyhow, the one thing I overlooked was noise. It's f-ing noisy in the ghetto! Police sirens, police helicopter, bum fights at 2AM, music blasting from passing cars, fire truck sirens, motorcycle noise, barking dogs, stupid people that honk when they're picking up someone, news helicopter, ambulance sirens, tires screeching, meth head yelling at passing cars, etc etc.

But it's really quite from 4AM til 2PM.

I wouldn't leave my house unlocked 24/7 anywhere. That's literally asking for trouble.

That's how it was growing up. My parents house, grandparent's house up the road, and aunt and uncle's house up the street were all unlocked almost all of the time. Us kids would just go back and forth all of the time. People have barns full of tools and toys unlocked. Tractors, ATVs, snowmobiles were all left unattended with keys in them. Crime was absolutely never a problem.

That's how it was when I was growing up as well. Even during those days people had their houses broken into. It got to a point where everyone just decided to keep doors locked for "just in case" measures.

Yes, but only during weekdays.

The job I just quit was in a ghetto. There was another murder a few blocks away overnight. Before that, rapes, murders, cop killing criminal, likely brothel across the street, vandalism, etc. on a very regular basis. However, my commute was bad enough that I was willing to move... Too bad the job sucked so bad that I couldn't see it as a long-term solution.

Jane and Wilson? When I worked at the car lot, our head office was at Finch and Arrow. Hated going up there. All sorts of shady looking people around. Guess they got the land cheap.

Thankfully I now work in a business park within a nice community.

Spent a lot of time in Jane and Finch and that whole area, never once had a single issue. Never felt out of place or scared either. You see the same thing walking the Yonge strip during club hours.

I lived in an apartment complex in SE Fresno (which is a pretty ghetto part of the city) for about a year. It was a nice, new, very large (485 units) gated apartment complex. It was like an island of nice in a sea of ghetto. Too much noise, too many thefts within the complex, too many nights of police helicopters with searchlights flying overhead. It wasn't worth it.

Syracuse.

Having lived in Syracuse the past ~4 years (just moved)... where the hell are people getting shot inside their homes innocently? Every stabbing, shooting, etc. is in "the ghetto" as the op put it. South Salina, Butternut, Teall/Fayette, Sunnycrest, etc... all of these are known "ghettos" and anyone who's lived there knows to stay the hell away at all costs.

Btw, is it snowing up there yet? :D

Depends, which city/neighborhood?

Are we talking south Chicago level of ghetto?

This. People slinging crack on the corner? No fuckin' way. A little gritty, and run down? Sure. There's probably interesting people there. A better choice is get a new job close to where you'd like to live.

Depends how ghetto it is. If it's crime and stuff, no thanks. If it's just rednecks with cars on blocks and people who converted their houses into a welding shop, or mad scientist powering up tesla coils at 5am, I could not care less.

But I would probably try to find a job that's closer before I move somewhere less desirable. Moving is more trouble than it's worth if you are well established and done lot of work on the house etc...

After all the work I put into my server room and rest of the house there's no freaking way I'd move unless I absolutely had to because of an environmental disaster or something.

ghetto-ish

Depends on exactly what this means to you.

If its just a little shaky then I'd seriously consider it. If were talking crack-dealers on the corner (ie: the hood) then no way.

How ghetto we talking about here? Most urban areas, even run-down ones, have nicer neighborhoods with upscale residential and dining. Research ahead of time you might find a cool walkable area even in the "ghetto".

That's actually likely, in my experience. Many downtown districts have nice tourist areas, nice areas for locals, and areas where people go to get mugged, all intermixed and on top of each other. It's not too much of an issue in the daylight, but you don't want to go one block too far this way or that when the streetlights are on.

yes.

i always move next to my work, so i've seen my share of bad neighbors, so, two things:
1) there's nice things about them. even living in brixton had its upsides.
2) eventually you'll want to move. bad areas do "get to you" eventually.

I won't live in the ghetto again. Hitting the deck in my living room because people were getting shot in front of my place is not my idea of a good time.

I don't recall exactly where. There was a story in the Post Standard a couple of weeks ago about girl who got shot while sitting inside on a living room couch.

Even the mayor's house got burglarized by a teenager recently.

No snow yet. :(

That literally happens everywhere. You can be in the suburbs and have your vehicles broken into or messed with. I live in a "quiet" suburban neighborhood bad shit happens all the time to peoples property. People shine a bad light on "the ghetto" and make it seem like you cant live a normal life there. This isn't the case. Just because the skin color or gang affiliation of the people committing the crimes are different, doesn't make the ghetto any worse.

More of something undesirable is worse. I'm sure whatever nice part of America you live in might have the occasional car break in now and then. But I bet there are many more car break ins per capita in the ghetto vs wherever you live.

And you are missing the whole proximity thing. Where my buddy lived, this stuff is all outside his front door. The yelling, drugs, shootings, fighting, and car break ins all within eye and earshot.

Also I doubt you get to witness people squatting and taking a shit on the sidewalk.

a lot of people are pretty much oblivious to how nice or how bad areas can be. even if they grew up down the street from it.

teens being teens showing off =/= crackheads jacking cars

what some people ive met consider "ghetto" is pretty laughable and on occasion pretty racist.
