I was at Anime Expo this past weekend. Surprisingly there was still plenty of fat, hairy guys dressed as Japanese schoolgirls there. I would have thought it would be too cliche by now.

At the Gundam panel, they announced a live action version.

Legendary Pictures has come aboard a live-action film based on Gundam, the popular Mecha anime and sci-fi franchise from Japan’s Sunrise Inc. The two companies will team to produce the first-ever live-action take on the property, and made the announcement at Anime Expo which kicked off today at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity’s growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies launch a war of independence against Earth, with the main characters piloting robots known as mobile suits.

Plot details are under wraps. Cale Boyter is overseeing the project on behalf of Legendary along with the Sunrise creative team.

Sunrise’s franchise, created in 1979, includes an anime TV series, manga, animated films, video games, plastic models, toys and novels.

Legendary, which knows of robot battles from its Pacific Rim movies, is now for the release of its Dwayne Johnson-starring pic Skyscraper next week, and has Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Detective Pikachu in postproduction. Its Godzilla vs. Kongmovie is also in the works.

I hear Scarlet Johansson, Tom Cruise, Tilda Swinton, and Matt Damon are in talks to star in it.

CG, not actual one. Live action means with real actors and not animated characters. Gundam is about teens piloting giant mechas. Sticking in senior citizens is not going to go well.

Sounds awful, but I remember thinking about how awesome a live action Transformers movie would be and we all know how that turned out...

Ah yes but Pacific Rim was a masterpiece* so I have hope

*and I'm not referring to script but how watching giant robots with appropriate LFE effects stomp around the city and beat on eachother with cargo ships makes me so very happy

That's a very good point. I did just watch Uprising recently and enjoyed it for what it was.

Pacific Rim should be a base template for any attempt at 'Big Robots Fighting' for the foreseeable future. It was basically a perfect movie, for what it was.

I'd kill for a Neon Genesis Evangelion movie/string of movies using the same basic principals.

Based on the roles Scarlett Johansson has been playing recently, in this movie she will play a fat, hairy guy dressed as a japanese schoolgirl.

I am calling it, in 10-15 years she will be the female version of Nicholas Cage. The downward spiral has actually already started considering she accepts any roles thrown at her including those meant for Asian women and transgender individuals.

I haven't seen it, but my impression is that PacRim is mostly land/sea based while Gundams are very air/space oriented

literally how I feel about any movie that replaces Japanese people with Caucasian Americans

I was joking about that list of actors.

Scarlet Johansson (Ghost in the Shell)
Tom Cruise (the Last Samurai)
Tilda Swinton (Dr. Strange)
Matt Damon (the Great Wall)

Yes, it was.. Fine.
Fine?

It had Optimus Prime and Megatron beating the shit out of each other.

I cried bitter fucking tears when Prime died.

Starscream's coronation

You had Lenard Nemoy playing the voice of Galvatron. And freakin' Orson Welles himself providing the voice of Unicron! It was incredible, and I make no apologies for liking it. :(

As mentioned, I was talking about the live action version. I have the animated BRD steelbook in my BRD collection and framed movie poster in my office. The animated movie is a work of art. ;)
