So I've got an older board here, slot 1.

It will boot with a PII 350 (uh klamath?) various celerons (medocino), etc.

I have a post card, and on this board, during the boot sequence, it will start at 0xC0, then go through C1 / C2/ etc. during the boot sequence.

So I figured... get a PIII 600, the fastest CPU that this board *should* support. (All PII boards should support non-coppermine PIIIs AFAIK, as they're... basically PIIs. right?)

When I plug in a PIII cumine 1GHz, the post card shows the board halting at "C0", which makes sense as it is unsupported.
But.. when I plug in the PIII 600 katmai, the post card just shows "0", and nothing happens at all.

Now... I believe all the CPUs that it did boot with are 2.0V. The particular PIII 600 katmai I have is 2.05V -> Do you think the non-boot issue is being caused by this confusing the VRM?

I think I'll look into the pinouts and try to trick the board into thinking it's a 2.0V processor, but was just wondering if anyone remembers having a similar issue in the past.
 
well, found a datasheet for the voltage reg IC, says it supports everything.

Plugged in a PII, the PIII, and a coppermine.. 2.0, 2.05, and 1.75v, all voltages were correct. So I guess that means I have bigger problems. 🙁

I skipped over PII completely - went from a Pentium 233 MMX to a PIII 733. Boy, you want to talk about a leap in performance...
 
What motherboard are you using? What chipset? Just because it is a slot 1 board does not mean a PII or PIII will work. If it is a board that was designed with the PII in mind, then it doesn't support the micro-code of the PIII
 
I have an Intel mobo and PII 400 you can have if you want it......
Was working last month before I took it out of the case...

233MMX -> first built rig of a Thunderbird 1ghz 😀

No idea on your problems, why are you even messing with it?
 
I was under the impression that the non cumine PIII's were wholly compatible with PII?

It's a soyo sy-6bb. 440BX. I'll try the cpus on my other BX and.. i think i've got one i810 and one via/133 chipset board around, see if they work.

I'm resuscitating these antiques for some logic control stuffs, and i need an ISA slot for my custom card 🙂
