little scratch in my paint

GF scratched my new Audi 🙁🙁.

With her keys when she got out the other day, she got across both doors somehow, near the sides, but not on the sides.

The dealership quoted me to repaint both doors, sand down, etc, etc...around 9+ hours of labor or something.

Any touch up I can do, before I use my comprehensive insurance later? (250 deduct).

I just don't want it to rust!

WTF, she keyed your car?
Repainting the car will reduce the value a lot more than some key scratches.

I guess, she technically did unknowing. We were both getting out and she was pretty embarrassed about it. It is not horrendous, but its obvious white 1 inch or so line, very very thin, but obvious.

I probably wont repaint it, I just want to save it from rusting :/

It won't rust unless she somehow got through all the clearcoat and paint

Touch up sounds good, seems very small

It's probably not even a real scratch but rather a scuff, if you can't feel it with your fingernail then it will buff out.

It is grooved, probably a little beyond the clearcoat.

What would a shop charge me for it? I don't want it to look like shit, because it is in a very common area...near the handle.

That'll buff out
Should have seen the scratches I put in hitting a post in my mom's car , and I buffed it all out before she ever knew😉

How--with what?

I will have to take a picture of it too.

I'd start with polishing compound, then wax
If its bad then you move up to 500G wet dry sandpaper 'and use it wet '
But polishing compound should get it and I'd leave sandpaper to a bodyshop

Which reminds me I'll have to do the same to the scratches my kids put in the Versa with rocks. . .

Hmm, not sure what they would charge. What you could do is try to get some Meguier's Scratch-X and see if you can get it out yourself.

This requires some elbow grease but it works well and is idiot proof. You may not be able to get it completely out but it'll be a lot less noticeable.

Anything more aggressive will probably require a machine and a professional. But anyone who is a REAL detailer should do this sort of stuff for you as part of your detail. So you may want to wait a few months until you get a few more scratches like this and then you can go for a full detail and get it all done at once.

define this process. I have heard about it before...but I do not see how it would get rid of the scratch in the paint....are there any good tutorials out there about wet/dry process?

Also any before and afters, to see if maybe that'll fix it up.

Yes ayabe, I sadly park my AUDI on the street in uptown here, so it is bound to get a few more dings. I think I will wait...wonder if anyoen has any good recommendations in Minnesota for a detailer that does not charge astronomically.

God, girls and keys! WTF!

Lots of them seem to hold the keys in the hand with which they close the door as they get in the car, rubbing them on the paint. Or look at the paint around the locks on cars without fobs - scratched to hell from poor aim (hey, no practice with that sort of thing 😉 ). Or my personal favorite, and one my fiancee does all the time: leave the keys in the trunk lock while you open the trunk, so they rub on the paint, then slam the trunk with the fucking keys still in the fucking lock! Why don't you just throw your keys at the trunk with all your might while you're at it? And then she wonders why the paint gets all fucked up around the lock.

ugh, I know thomsbrain....man keys IN the trunk when opening...tsk tsk TSK.

GF also puts stuff on her roof, I HATE that...I can see all the scratches and crap from her dragging it off the roof, or when she puts her keys on the roof... //killself.

oh yeah, not very good with the aim either, her new Yaris is that way around the door key area, and the ignition...only had it for 2500 miles too, ugh.

did you try going to an independent body shop ?

No, my last experience at one was shitty....they did not do all that I asked, or said they did...sadly, it was too late for me to go back and bitch.

Tutorial

Pretty skillful little guide here.

First thing first, take a picture! Let us know what you're dealing with. A scratch may be easily removed by a light polish all the way up to filling, priming and re-spray. It all depends on severity, which is much easier to see than describe.

From the sounds of it, it sounds like you may not be able to completley get rid of it without wet-sanding and touching up. A good compromise to this is too polish the area to round the edges of the scratch off. I had to do this to a pretty long scratch that I have on my new R32. Now you can't see if unless you're looking right at it and a specific angle.

So...take a picture and we'll go from there.

I just repaired a 1/2" long, very deep scratch in my car with a kit from Dupli-Color. They call it a Premium Touch-Up Repair Kit.

It comes with Spot Putty, Primer, Clearcoat, 1000 grit sandpaper, sanding disc and polishing compound. I bought it locally but it would have been cheaper at the Dupli-Color site. The only other thing you need is touch up paint to match your car.

The Dupli-Color site said my color was not available in stores and they were right, I could not find it. That would have been cheaper in the store. They hit me for $13 including shipping.

This scratch was right down to bare metal in my case. The repair came out quite well. Metallic paint is tough to match. But I am happy with the results. No worries about it rusting.
