Little Perl help?

For all you Perl pro's.

Using Perl, I am trying to grep the /etc/hosts file for a given entry based on ipaddress. Typing it out, I would "grep ipaddress /etc/hosts". Now, how can I do the same thing in perl, but then save the output to a variable? Something like:

($grep_out) = 'grep 1.1.1.1 /etc/hosts'; #What am I doing wrong? Thanks....
