Hye guys,
im pretty sure you all kno this but i know theres some people who never thought of it. We all have old power supplies laying around. i was building a new pc about 2 months ago and i didnt have enought money for fans and a case (im 13). but i had like 6 power supplies laying around (8-200 watt). they had fans in them.....so i took them out. Then I took my old gateway 2000 case and painted it black with a clear coat. Then I made 1 hole in the bottom front, 1 on the side, and one at the top. there was one alreay on the back. Them i put all the parts in and guess what......my e3 venice 3000 is doin 2.4 on stock cooler with temps 35-43 (can do 2.7 but gets a lil hot(42-56)). good airflow and a nice case for how many bux??? $0.00 🙂. cant provide pics but trust me it works well.

P.S. the fans from the power supply r actually pretty good....
P.S. 2: if youre going to try this, about half of cases that are made by gatewat, dell, hp etc. have their backplates built in.......so youre going to have to cut it out 😉

Ill be more than happy to answer any questions

opening PSU's can be risky. I've never personally been zapped, but I've heard some stories. not sure how long one can hold juice after it's been unplugged, but it's something to think about.

I've opened many a power supply to jack the fan and or stuff it into a case where it had no business being stuffed 🙂 Sounds like a good job on the case mod, I'd love to see it (Post Pics when/if possible). Ressurecting Old cases is fun and rewarding if you like the final result. I just finished: This one. Keep moddin!

BTW can you describe the gateway case for me? My first pc I ever built completely (about your age) went into a Gateway Full Tower case just like this: http://www.yamaguchi.net/shopping.files/gateway2000p90.jpg

man, good times.

i currently dont have the case im proud of but i just got done the same case with what i had( gold spraypaint and some other things) ill post pics in about 20 mins 😉

sorry the only thing i have right now is my crappy webcam. ill post pics of the good case when i get a chance.

Also, you can use the cables from the old power supplies. I do a lot of power cable modding in my machine. I have dual PSUs in my machine, and the 24p and other connectors were just sitting there. So I modded them (the +12v lines from them) to power fans. Also, I used old PSUs, cut the cables, soldered on male ends, and used them as extension cables for various things throughout the case.

Thanks, somebody pointed out the PSU blockage to me in an earlier thread, Since then I've managed to bend the support down (Which wasn't actually supporting anything), alowing the whole PSU fan to run unobstructed. Updated Pic

LOL...for a second there I thought I was looking at my machine...same motherboard, CPU and GPU heatsinks, and a similar power supply...but where's my intake fan and yellow sleeving?

😉

phax, dude nice case man....only one thing bothers me.....are those 2 tornadoes u got in there?????? plz tell me u dnt cuz if u do...whoa. i mean its really cool that u can stand all that noise

Nope no tornado action in this case 🙂 The fan up top is made by Papst. Not sure what its rated air flow is, but will certainly push it (It is a tad on the loud side, but NOWHERE near a tornado. Certainly tolerable. The 80mm fan mounted on the back on teh unit is some "Mad Dog" pos that pushes 25CFM at a very low volume. Its not a silent case, but it certainly doesn't stand out when its turned on either.
