Little Ice Age

The Godfather

I can not understand how the 4 degree Farenheit change in climate during the 14th to 17th century can make such a great effect on society. Such a small drop in temperature is linked to the fall of the Vikings and the Black Plague. The fact that Greenland is cold currently, witchcraft and massive food shortages.

How can it get that cold?

1) Due to the cold, rats dug ways into homes of families and spread the black plague causing millions to die.

2) Vikings established themselves in Greenland, which at the time was full of trees, grass, and a nice climate (before the Little Ice Age) Then due to the unexpected change, their herds stayed indoors for over 6 months, people started feeding on sea animals but that wasn't enough. Trade routs were stopped and soon they all were dead.

3) Over 60,000 people were killed due to witch craft for causing these enormous changes.

4) Crops were crushed by the rain, frozen and useless. Famine deaths spread.

All of this because of a 4 degree drop in temperature?

Yes i know a lot of the facts named are linked to mankind's filth and ignorance at the time, but had also something to do with this change.

Ocean currents FTW?

That is 4 degrees average right?

I'm not asking what caused the Little Ice Age. I'm asking how can a 4 degrees drop in average temperature cause all that.

I don't quite understand how the word "average" plays a role here.

Because while the average temperature drop for the world would have been 4 degrees, there would have been some areas of the Earth (such a Greenland) during certain seasons where the temperature drop would have been more severe.
