Little help with my build.

My brother's computer just died, and he needs something immediately to replace it. The only thing I was able to salvage was a WD Raptor 150 plus a floppy, dvd burner, etc. He wanted the nice black/black Antec case, so I added that in.

I know the new M2 is out soon, but he can't wait. Put the following together at newegg, and would really appreciate some opinions.

Antec Performance I p180B
eVGA Geforce 7900GT KO
Enermax Liberty ELT500AWT
Zalman SNPS 7700-CO
Artic Silver 5
Corsair XMS 2GB Twinx2048-3200c2pt
Athlon 64 X2 3800+
DFI Lanparty UT nF4 SLI-DR Expert SLI

His budget is around $1200, and the above is hitting it pretty nicely.

Am I missing something? Are there better options out there?

Thanks in advance

good overall build. the zalman cooler is a lil outdated and bested by many other air coolers on the market. look into ninja, si120 xp120, everything else is excellent. you might want to do some searching in the forums for people deciding between the 7900 and x1800... see what they chose and for what reasons

Newegg doesn't sell the Ninja does it? I've been looking for a good cpu heatsink but am just going with was good a few years ago. What else would you recommend? Thanks for the input btw.

Ok I'm dumb. Found the Ninja on newegg.

So you think the Ninja here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835185001

is better than the Scythe Mine cooler here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835185023

I see the second one has the fan mounted right inside the fins. Probably makes more noise.

I'm going to be shipping this computer to my brother once assembled, and would really like a heatsink I can ship separately, and that he can easily attach.

Then you don't want the Ninja, And I wouldn't recommend shipping with it attached.

I think you made a good choice with the 7700 Cu or ALCu. You can install the mounting hardware/back plate without the heatsink attached. Installing the Zalman 7xxx series is about as easy as it gets, just two simple screws that you tighten in a alternating 1-2 turn pattern.

As for the case, this is personal preference but take a look at the some Lian Lis, particularly the V1100.

Pretty cool stuff.

I love eVGA for video cards!

I prefer kingston ram to all else
and asus for motherboards

That's a great enermax PSU too

I would also get two 7600GT's instead of one 7900GT'
That gives you much better flexibility with being able to use heavy AA in your graphics with a minor reduction in peak Frame rate. Look into it.

I wouldn't ship it with the ninja attached ... just thought I could attach it to test, then remove it and ship the ninja separately. I'm assuming the ninja is just as easy to attach as the zalman ... seems to have a back plate as well.

He's really stoked on the idea of using the ninja now that I've told him ... do you think it would be too difficult for him to attach once the entire thing arrives?

From what I've read they are a major pain in the a$$ to install. Thermalright has similar offerings the; HR-01 (passive), and Ultra-90 that are supposed to be easier.

That's strange. ... I've been reading the reviews and each one says the Ninja is really easy to install ... less force required than the others.

You're right the Ninja is one of the easier heatsinks to install, I must have been thinking of something else, sorry. 🙁

The one factor that might be a problem though is that it's size might make it awkward to try to install once the motherboard is mounted in the case. Unless you are confident in you're brothers ability to try it I would say stick with the Zalman 7000 or 7700, they are still very good heatsinks.
