Ok, so I havent really pc gamed in awhile. Thus, I have let my PC upgrading slide. I'm really not even sure whats the cutting edge these days.

Here is my current config....

Intel 2.4g proc (socket 478, if that matters)
ASUS P4P800
756mb of pc3200 DDR ram
6800GS AGP video card
Turtle beach sound card
On-board networking.

-------------------------------------

If I cant get away with this setup, what about upgrading just the ram or just the video card?

Im looking to do this as cheap as possible but am willing to spend a few houndred if necessary.

Thanks for any assistance.....

PS... by new games I mean-> Orange box, Assasains Creed, COD4, etc

nvidia has a system analyzer at their games website that can check your system vs. requirements for newer games.

 I know nothing about Assassin's Creed (I thought it was a PS3 game?), but I would think you would have trouble running COD2 decently on that PC, so COD 4 could be tough.

definitely minimum CPU/RAM spec, video card is bottom end of midrange (midrange being 7600GS/GT or thereabouts)

edit: source games should be fine though :)

Orange box should run ok. I've got a similar setup. AXP2400, 768 ram, 6600GT and I can play CS:S & TF2 pretty well. TF2 requires me to turn down the settings a bit but maybe I'm just greedy.

The problem is that 768 mb of ram comes from either 2 sticks ( 512 and 256 ) or 3 sticks ( 256 ) and that is making your memory under perform. You should be using dual channel memory mode. Also, your CPU is really slow compared to Athlon 64s which are already outclassed by Core 2 Duos. Games will further run away with you. Stick to Half-life 2 based games and you'll be ok for a bit but not for long.

If you want to upgrade your current computer :

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819116027

and then invest in atleast a 1 gig DDR400 2-2-2-5(6) kit of ram.

However, you might find it just as easy to upgrade to a e4300 C2D, 2g DDR2, and a midrange card like a X1950PRO to put you in good shape for another year and a half. e4300 will OC to 2.7ghz+ with no mods and on stock HS/Fan. You could also settle for a good AM2 based Athlon 64 X2.

Or 2*128 + 2*256 ;) Which would work in dual channel mode.

I agree with your upgrade advice, however.

Depending on what "a few hundred" means you can either go with what hooflung suggested (C2D, 2GB, x1950). Or cut the price a bit by getting A64X2 and a mobo on nForce 550/560/570 instead of C2D and a mobo on P35 (saving at least $40, I would imagine). Then overclock (my setup with an $80 Biostar mobo and X2 4000+ for $75 runs at 2835Mhz, which is roughly ~5600+ :D). By saving a few bucks you should be able to get a better video card, x2900Pro maybe. I would wait until 8800GT comes out, as well as x2950Pro; they're only a month or so away. Without them, there are no decent mid-range DX10 cards out at the moment.
