I was working on assembling a computer yesterday. Got the motherboard in the case, put in the memory, added the processor, and then applied the heat sink and fan combo. I wanted to give it a little test to make sure everything was good. I plugged in the computer and the fan turned on for a second or two and then went dead. I have tried removing the motherboard from the case and removing the memory in all these scenarios the fan comes on briefly then stops.

This is only my second try at building a system, the first one went smoothly, so I have not experienced this type of problem before. I would be grateful for any trouble shooting techniques or speculation to the nature of the problem.

Thank you for your help.

1 - Your CPU could be overheating, and the board is turning itself off so it doesn't go up in flames. Is your heatsink/fan combo decent for your processor? Did you remember to use either thermal grease, a pad, or some other compound in between your heatsink and processor?

2 - Have you tested any of these components on other systems? Maybe your RAM is dead?

3 - Is your mobo jumper free? If not, have you properly configured the pins for your processor and RAM type?

4 - Are there any beeps from your mobo? Depending on your BIOS (award, pheonix, etc) the beep type and duration means something different - check your mobo manual for that info.

5 - It is also possible your power supply either cannot handle the load (which would be strange if that is ALL you have hooked up to it) or that it is on its last legs... do you have another power supply you can test with?

6 - Is your RAM in the proper slot? Generally there are 3 RAM slots, and the slot numbered either 0 or 1 has to be filled before the others are. If you have multiple sticks of RAM, just try booting with one stick and see what happens. Try each stick separately.
