Little bits of metal

I was unboxing my new XFX 850W power supply today, and put it on the workbench. When I picked it up, I saw tiny metal particles and black shavings were stuck to the power supply. I think some may have even fallen inside the fan of the power supply!

I located the source of this stuff. They were caused by the tiny little metal shavings that come from the inside of computer case. I think they kind of flake off from screw threads, etc. when installing and removing the motherboard, power supply, and other parts from the inside of a case. Somehow the workbench wasn't clean, which resulted in this situation.

Would I risk shorting out my brand new power supply by plugging it in? The particles aren't huge chunks or metal--more like tiny metal shavings mixed with tiny bits of black case paint that came off from screw holes and the such.

Tried blowing it out really well with that canned air duster stuff?

Well i guess you could learn to suck...

And an opening for a whole new career appears...:p

I'd contact XFX customer support and talk to them. It's probably not a big deal, but if you get some sort of "paper trail" on the problem right off the bat, that should help cover your ass if the PSU fails down the road.

I'd be concerned myself...and would put XFX on the hot seat about it.

That would be a good idea if it was there fault. When i read the OP i thought it picked up the particles from his own work bench, which was not clean. I didnt think XFX had anything to do with it.

OP i would blow it out with some canned air and then use it, not much else you can do.

A PSU that I had given a friend, burned out on him. After checking it out, and IIRC taking it apart, there was a screw inside, that shorted something out. It must have fallen off of the top of the computer, bounced off of the grill that extended outwards, and landed inside the PSU. Luckily, I suppose, there was no fire or anything.

Der...yeah, missed the workbench part of that...

Time for some compressed air...I like to use our old vacuum cleaner with the hose reversed...it's MUCH cheaper than canned air...as long as you don't touch any components with the nozzle.
