How old are they now?

Once they get into kindergarten and grade school you'll start the process then instead. Unless you keep them home schooled they'll still get exposed at some point.

They're in kindergarten and 3rd grade right now. There's been no noticeable increase in sickness over the years.
 
there are many viruses that cause flu-like symptoms, but getting the flu shot yearly is a good idea if it saves you from at least one episode.

Force the kid and the gf and yourself to observe hygiene before stepping into your house.
Avoid contact when one of them is newly sneezing.

Just an hypothesis: aren't bigger kids less likely to carry around germs?

Oh the days of being sick as a kid! I used to lick the escalator railing at the mall because it tasted "funny"...

I don't get sick very often though now as an adult.
