LiteOn LTD-166: Scratchy sounds

Hey all:

I just bought a Lite-On LTD-166 16x DVD-ROM drive from Newegg.

When I put in a disc, there's a scratchy sound when it spins up, in addition to the "air" sound common with fast drives these days. When the drive spins down, you can also hear the scratchy noise too. When the drive is still spinning and you eject it, you can hear the scratchy sound slow down even after the tray is all the way out.

I also noticed that when I was putting in the drive there's a sound of something loose in there that resembles the scratchy noise. Maybe a spring, or something that sits on a track and goes up and down depending how you're holding the drive. Not sure what it is, but it's sure annoying!

Is this normal with the LTD-163 and LTD-166 drives? Any help would be great.

Thanks!

does your drive have two different sounds when it's spinning up? The normal "whooosh" air sound as it builds up speed in addition to the scratchiness that comes with it? How about when you're ejecting the CD while it's still spinning? Does the "scratchy" sound slow down even after the tray's already out?

Which drive do you have?

My Lite-ON doesn't make the 'scratchy' sounds and my friends does.....you can hear them slow down when you have ejected a CD, just like yours does....both work fine.

Hey, thanks for the info. Are your models both the same? Which one do you have? Him? The sound is actually really annoying so I'm going to see if I can get another one, but I need to find out which one does that and doesn't. Or is it a crapshoot?

I also just bought a LTD-166 from newegg. I did notice a jarring spin up sound. While it's a little annoying I'm more concerned with the drive being quiet during playback, which it is.

Thanks for the link. That must be what's making the start-up noise.

Yeah, it's kinda nice to know that the scratchy sound are the balls moving around. It's kinda annoying though, especially since the drive can spin up and down quite a bit depending on your usage patterns.
