I recently had a motherboard swap and didn't notice this initially.

I can no longer use this driveas a UDMA drive, I dropped it down to PIO mode 4 in bios and it is now working correctly.

It was spitting out data errors left and right (verified by plying a dvd/vcd and using nero cd speeds scandisk (100% "damaged")

I swapped the drive for an identical model and it did the EXACT same thing, so it is obviously not the drive itself. However on the same channel my cdrw drive is dma33 and is working just fine (plextor 2410a)

All I can say is WTF? Anyone got any possible reasons for this problem?

(see rig details for specs, its the main system)

try this...uninstall or remove the ide channel to which your drive is connected....(via device manager) and restart and see if that does the trick. It works for me sometimes

i got the same thing, tho i windows 2000

my 3-year old 40X cd-rom worked in DMA. of course the cdrw was UDMA too.

so i swapped the IDE cables with the HD (try to get more length for the optical drives in an antec tower), didn't work

then i switched back, now if cd-rom is DMA it takes over 1 minute in windows splash screen (normally 10 seconds)

i gave up and got a dvd-rom and now it runs in DMA. might be the age and incompatibility of old optical drives...

just pick up a $10/free AR CDRW if i were you...

Now this I do NOT get.
I currently have 2 98se installs, one is a lot newer, and the other is quite old
the newer one works with the drive in pio mode, the older one does not
however if i totally uncheck dma mode in device manager it works (but lags the system so its a waste of time to use it anyways)

I also tried the drive alone on the channel and of course, same problem.

It is also doing another problem - randomly ejecting for no reason.

I am still looking for a solution, it appears to be related to the nforce2 ide drivers - but of course there don't seem to be any "special" drivers for 98se, the only "solution" I have found that works is to flat out disable dma, but that still results in a near useless drive.
