Liteon burner w/burnproof gives buffer underrun! Please help!

I just got a Liteon 12x10x32 burner. Supposedly this has burnproof on it, but I have gotten four coasters due to buffer underruns. Do I have to turn on burnproof or something? Please help!

Yes, you have to turn on BURNproof, which means you must use a program that is capable of using this technology. If your burner is a IDE/ATAPI burner, then make sure to defrag your HD and not use your computer while the CD is burning..Regards

Ok, thanks a lot. I was using Adaptec Easy CD Creator (it came with it), so I suppose it doesn't have support for burnproof. I guess I'll have to pick up a copy of Nero. Thanks a lot.

It would save a lot of time if you gave needed information in original posting. Think your problem out and post whatever you think might be relevant. Such as (in this case):
Which version of Adaptec came with your burner?
Which version of Windows are you running?
What are the capabilities of your hard disk controller. EIDE,UDMA-33/ 66/100?
Many recent versions of Adaptec software packaged with drives install version 4.02d and have a directory on the CD called update or upgrade.
In that directory is an upgrade to 4.02e which supports several varieties of BU prevention technologies. install that update and any available from the Roxio web site (I believe there is a 4.03x, but you must have W98 or higher to use). Adaptec burning software is now handled at www.roxio.com.
You can tell if DMA is enabled by:
-Rt.click on My Computer
-Click on Properties
-Click on Device Manager Tab
-Click on + sign next to CD-ROMs
-See list of CD-ROM drives installed.
-DblClick on your burner name.
-Click on Settings tab.
-See if DMA box is checked or not.

Roxio says to unclick DMA (IOW, turn DMA off for the burner)--don't ask me why...

Despite what Roxio says.... I got the new EZ CD with my newest burner and decided to use it. I can not burn over 4X without the DMA box checked. Kept getting buffer underruns.

Go to your device manager and click on the CD Burner located under CDROM drives. Click properties. Go to the settings tab. Is the DMA box checked? If it isn't, check it. If it is, what the hell.... go ahead and check it.

First things first, a Buffer Underrun is caused by a hardware problem. Buffer Underruns are caused by data transmission problems, corrupted files, or software glitches. CD burners have to have data that meets Orange Book or Joilet standards to successfully burn the data. (The Orange is for music and the joilet is for data) Burn-Proof is a function that allows the laser to turn off if the data stream slows down and then restart when it get to a full packet level, notice I did not say that the data stream had stopped.
In the age of Napster, corrupt files are the maost frequent case of coasters. A lot of times the people posting the music didn't no how to rip it from the CD, so you see all sorts of sampling rates and frequencies. To record a Audio CD-R the music has to be ripped at 44.1k.
Playing the file on your computer won't help you tell if the MP3 file is out of spec because it will play, but it might not meet the Orange book standard. You will have to download the file again.
Another item to consider is that the data must be error free, if it has any glitches in it the CD burn will stop, but it will be reported as a buffer underrun.
The next cause is that your CD-Rom is not fast enough to keep up with the Burner.
EZ-CD does support Burn-Proof automatically.
Also go to http://www.easttexaschat.com/cool_tools.htm#vcache and download a freeware program called Cacheman which has presets to let you optimize your vcache for burning by changing the Min/Max Cache and read ahead

I was making backups of my programs discs, so I don't think corrupted files is the problem. I'll look into DMA and try it again. Thanks a lot.
