Why is it when I try to burn with the latest version of NERO it only wants to burn at 12x. The only options NERO gives me is 4x, 8x, and 12x. The burner is 40x12x48. Thanks, Chris:)

What type and speed of media are you using ?

Are you using a CDRW disk at all instead of a CDR ?

Yeah....that sounds like the problem....if you are using CD-R for definate though then try updating the firmware but I suspect GAZZA's right with the CD-RW idea...you'll be limited to 12x there. I used to think that it meant the first time you wrote to a CD-RW it would do it at full speed and the "rewrite" speed was for re-writing it (as in combination of erase + new write)...DOH!

Well one thing that may go against that is that I have yet to any CDRW media that will run at 12x , fastest I have seen is 10x .

Right now Im using Memorex 16x CD-R's. Ok, I see why it might not want to go 40x, but shouldnt it do 16x. My friend claims, with the same burner and 16x CD-R's, he can get 40x with his. What do they change on the media to determin speeds. ( if none of this makes sence, thats cause I just woke up:))......Thanks, Chris

someone posted a similar problem in general hardware. they resolved the problem with a nero update. of course, i would first test out the cdrw with some 40x cdr's before taken any other actions.

I would agree, go to nero;s website and download the latest update for nero. I think it is version 5.5.78 or newer. You have to be running nero version 5.5 or later to use the latest upgrade. it should work fine if you got you nero software with your burner. Good luck and let us know if this helps.

Thanks guys. Im sending it back to Newegg. I picked up some 40x CD-R's and it still only gives 12x, 8x, or 4x. I even tried using Roxio, and it did the same thing. I also flashed the firmware on it.:)

In Nero. Goto the Recorder menu, click on your LiteOn drive, a button towards the bottom of the recorder dialog will show up saying something to the effect of "Advanced Options" click on it. Their should be 2 options, one to disable SmartBurn and another to disable the SmartSpeed feature or whatever. Disable the SmartSpeed feature. Close down Nero. Insert your blank CD and then run Nero again. It should say the max speed now.

Lite-On drives by default try to sense how fast they can burn the CD safely. This sometimes is not accurate and needs to be disabled.

stevewm,

Thanks! I was having that same problem with my 40X lite-on burner. I did like you said and disabled the Smart-Burn and now its reading 40X. :) I think this wont hurt anything unless your trying to burn a CD media with a slow write speeds. Smart -Burn knocks it down to the fastest safe speed for your media incase your running at high speeds, so along as your media supports 40X you should be fine. If you notice Overburn and Underrun Protection are still enabled.
