Hi folks,

I am thinking of buying another DVD writer. Between the Liteon 812S and NEC 2500A, which one should I get?

Thanks.

Or you could flash the 2500A to do it's duties 😉

That *appears to work*, but it hasn't been tested much with DL media yet from what I've seen. While the 2500A and 2510A are essentially the same, there is a concern among some of the DVD-R sites that while the flash takes, it doesn't recalibrate the beam for burning DL media, which the 2510A is.

Basically it probably will work ok with DL media, but the 2510A is probably a safer bet for only about ~$15 more...IMO.

Yes, you can take your chances with a flash hack and save the BIG $15, or you can pay a little extra and get the real deal. I'll take the real deal. 😉

The NEC is $2.71 cheaper and it's a better DVD burner.

The Lite-On is good, though. The NEC's only advantage seems to be that its DVD burns are a little better. The Lite-On is a better drive if it's going to be the only drive in your system, because it reads at 40X, it has a better seek time, and it's better at extracting audio and copying protected CD's.

But you said you were getting "another" DVD burner. Why? If you already have one, why do you want to have two drives that can't burn dual-layer? The 2510A is only $86.

LOL Alright already but seeings how I already had the 2500A and flashed it does anyone know where I can get some of them $13 dual layered discs to try it? I read that Verb was supposed to have some ready.

I haven't seen them anywhere, but I have heard of people getting some, but not many. I believe the only ones out ATM are the Verbatims, and Ritek and others are looking to start ramping up production on DL by mid to late summer from what I've heard. So far, it's looking like July - August before we start seeing these in more quantity. I think I can wait @ $13/disc though...might as well buy the movie again. 😉

I'm personally looking forward to, in the short term anyhow, improving quality on 8X -/+ R media, dropping prices on +R media, and the increase in speed on +/- RW media. I think I'll wait awhile before jumping into DL just yet, but it's nice to know my drive will support it when I do.

🙂

It's kind of facinating how the "best" brand seem to emerge.

Back, in the CDR days, Plextor was king.

In the CDRW days, Liteon was the big name.

Now in the DVD/RW days, it seems like NEC is the top dog.

Actually Plextor still is King IM and many others O if money is no object, same as before. Usually along with all the product competition people want price-performance

Thank you all for the response. Yeah I did have Liteon 851S and 411S, but I gave my 851S away. The 411S will be given away too. But I also have a plextor 40x cd-writer. I will get the NEC 2500A. Someone on Newegg said he was able to burn dual layer with the hacked firmware.

I have heard a lot of good things about the NEC burner, although I have no experience with either one of them. I have built systems with Lite-On CD burners which were excellent; I have yet to hear of a failure yet. I would just get whichever one is cheaper.

1 to everyone else in favor of the NEC... I got whooped.

I did a little more research on the NEC (I honestly didn't know much about it before I did my first post above) and now agree with everyone else....

I'm on the winning side again! 😛
