LiteOn 24102b doesn't burn below 8x, is this a problem?

I read the review on this CDRW drive and it states that the LiteOn 24102b 24x won't write at speeds below 8x. (no 1x, 2x or 4x speeds available) . Is there any reason I should be concerned about this? Any reasons to burn at speeds below 8x?

Never thought about it but you do bring up a valid point. I have a lot of 4x RW discs that are still useful but might not work on a writer that won't burn CD-RWs at lower than 8x speed.

That is interesting. I don't happen to have any CDRW discs in use right now but that is a possible problem for some. The other thing I've heard some comments on is that some people prefer to do certain burns at slow speeds like 2X - I'm thinking audio CD's.

I have a LiteOn 16101b and have backed up software CDs at 16x with no problems and no coasters. I copied a small number of music CDs using the save to hard drive first method. Of 2 I burned at 16x, one of them had bad music tracks for the latter songs. The latter trackes weren't correct but started in the middle of songs and were messed up. I burned a few other music CD's at either 12x or 8x to avoid a bad copy. Those all were fine. So anectodal experience leads me to believe that slower burn speeds may be useful.

Have any others had this experience where they burned at slower speeds to ensure good music recordings?

It supports CD-RW at lower speeds, I just burned one @4x and another @2x the other day.

Here is a quote from the CDRinfo website review below. They stated clearly that LiteOn 24x CDRW drives can't write below 8x speed. But spanner, you say you can. That is interesting. Well, perhaps they made a mistake in the review?

BTW, what are the reasons you are burning at those slower speeds? Inquiring minds want to know!

"Conclusion

Positive (+):

- Supports 20x and 24x writing (Z-CLV) speeds
- "Smart-BURN" anti-coaster technology
- Very Good data reading performance
- Very Good Seek times
- Very Good DAE ripping quality
- Very good packet reading/writing performance
- Supports DAO-RAW
- Can read/write SubChannel Data from Audio/Data tracks
- Can produce perfect SD2 backups!!!
- Supports CD-Text (reading/writing)
- Supports Overburning (up to 99mins)
- Supports Ultra-DMA 33 connection interface
- Very good behavior even with non-24x certified media (not even a single coaster!)
- Retail package contains Nero 5.5x
- Low noise when operating
- Low price (170$<=) compared to the competition

Negative (-):
- Low reading performance with HS-RW media (16x CLV)
- Low DAE ripping speed compared to the competition...
- Very bad CloneCD reading speeds
- Doesn't support lower recording speeds than 8X
- No cooling fan

LiteOn's attempt at the 24x writing speed is much more than satisfactory. The LTR-24102B seems to be the faster recorder, for now, and managed to outperform both Sanyo and TDK 24x drives in many reading/writing tests. The drive's overall performance was very good and -for sure- users will enjoy both 20x and 24x writing speeds. Other important features such as: support for SD2 protected discs, overburning (up to 99min) and reading/writing SubChannel data are present. Of course nothing is perfect and the drive needs improvement at the DAE ripping speed and when reading protected CDs. Also the drive doesn't support 1X, 2X, 4X recording speeds, which maybe be wanted from some users."

i have the lite-on drive and let me tell you, it WILL burn at 4X for CD-RW. THe lowest speed it will burn at is 8X for regular cdr though.

Any other input on this subject? Any reason one would need speeds lower than 8x? Music CD burning or otherwise?

The main reason I can think of for 2x or 4x burning is overburning audio cd's. I think you could probably get away with 8x on a drive like this, though, so it may not be an issue. I'd have to try making some overburned cd's at 8x on this drive to know for sure.

I don't own a Lite-on, but I own a TDK VeloCD 24/10/40B and 8X is the lowest speed here too...was quite surprised about that...
