That's more than the Sony drive is going for now. Pricegrabber brings up $299 for the Sony and between the two, I'd rather have the Sony.

Enjoy!

the lite-on is a rebadge of the sony drive. to quote myself from the original lite-on dvd burner post....

...Lite-On IT also will increase its key components purchasing from Sony.

The combination of Sony and Lite-On creates a very big and powerfull company on the optical storage market.

credit goes to the cdfreaks.com article found here.

So do they both do +/-? Like the calculator?

Also do they do X or / ?

BTW: I difinately likes Liteon better then sony.

I also read its just a rebadged sony.. hopefully the real lite-on's come out soon for the $150 price they said they would be

just waiting for the SONY DRX-510UL 4X ±R/RW. i wish the lite-on's would be at a lower price, but delay's in shipments and such i guess have hindered the price drop. only time shall tell.

What's the different between the DRX-510 and 500?

I've got a LiteOn DVD reader, a LiteOn CD burner and a Sony DVD burner, and I love them all.

My question for you is how can you prefer a drive that hasn't even shipped yet? And why would you prefer the LiteOn with no track record yet to Sony's proven drive, especially if the LiteOn is just the Sony drive with a different label?

Get real, fanboy.

The only difference is a firmware tweak to increase the +RW writing to 4x from 2.4x. Forums are already speculating that the 510 firmware can be flashed to the 500 drive. Not worth the wait or the higher price, just flash your 500 drive (or if you don't use +RW media, it's pointless anyway).

also, i hear the availability of 4X cd's will be wider when it comes out. and also, i like the design of it. since im going to be lugging the external one around for my laptop and my desktop, i want it to look nice. theres really no difference other than cosmetic appearance. but im just vain like that. 😀

Well... the reason is simply becoz Lite-On is more affordable then Sony.

And I am not a fanboy, actually anything cheaper ME LIKES. So if Sony is cheaper then ME DEFINATELU LIKES.

This is pure speculation (the 500a/500ax flash upgrade to 4x +RW burning)
If you do anything that makes sense for +RW discs (regular data backups, utilities or mp3 backups that need to be "refreshed", etc) using +RW makes a lot of sense. It formats in about 10 seconds, it burns a lot faster (even at 2.4x) and is more compatible (in my experience) that -RW. -R is good because its usually cheaper, but on the Sony drives the +RW is better for re-writing, in my opinion.
I hope you are right about the 4X +RW but I've read just the opposite on the forums - people are speculating that the 510 is acually a different drive.

Agreed that the +RW is better for some purposes, and I would prefer 4x to 2.4x if I were writing lots of full burns. But given the nature of how you use +RW for data, how often am I copying massive amounts to it that I would really appreciate the speed difference? So far, I've never found myself frustrated waiting on a burn.

Right now, we're all paying the price that early adopters always do.

Fair enough. This Dell deal is cheaper than Sony, but otherwise they are the same drive and the same price. And I love the look of the Sony drive. Everyone who sees it in my rig knows there's something special about it. The LiteOn just looks like a CD burner to me.

Too bad this drive didn't come out at the $150 everyone was predicting. Now THAT would be a hot deal.

Most of us got the Sony for $250 from dell way back

What I meant was I got it for $200 net and I used the store credit toward a $200 Omron foot massager, which is amazingly good.

Question about this being a rebadged Sony - checking the specs of the DRU500 - they don't match the ones Dell lists..
Sony Liteon
160ms 300ms access times cd
200ms 250ms access time dvd

Anyone know which Sony this is supposed to be?

this is not a sony drive. that is, the lite-on being mentions is not a rebadged anything.

the rebadged sony drive the other guy mentioned is independent of the deal.

Lite-On is the OEM manufacturer of the newest Sony DVD DRU-500AX drive. Sony uses their own firmware, so when it is installed on your computer it shows up as a Sony drive.
I personally prefer Lite-On's firmware so I will probably be buying the LDW-400D when I am able to get one at a good price. The LDW-400 and the DRU-500AX are the same drive, both made by Lite-On. Sony seems to never offer rebates on their DVD burners and Lite-On doesn't either, because they don't want to be cutting the price against their OEM buyers like Sony. Hopefully, TDK, Memorex and others who currently use Lite-On's for their CD burners will start using this drive and the price will drop to compete with the Pioneer 105 and other less expensive drives. Once other companies are selling it you'll start seeing some rebate action also. The -/+ format is still the way to go, -R supposedly is the best for video and +RW supposedly is the best for backing up data.

Are you sure about that? Everything I have heard is that Sony makes both of the drives, not Lite-On.
