Lite On - Is it simply junk?

I have now had 2 Lite On CD Writers die on me within 3 months.

First one was a 16x, bought in December 2001 and used for about 5 disks.
The current one was an exchange for the 16x and is a 24x that has just died (maybe 7 disks).

Well I guess it is back to Best Buy again to see what they can do about it 🙁

The problem is that the drives simply stop being detected - for no apparent reason. They still have the LED's working and you can insert/reject disks etc - but nothing else works.

my lite-on has been working since i bought it from newegg in september. sh!t luck for you or me? the world may never know...

my 16x is still working since Oct 2k1 have burned in excess of 30+ usable(..hehe..not including user error frisbees of about 8-10..my bad..tried some extreme situational burning..you know you gotta test the limits 😉 )

Sounds like yer having bad luck. I've had good luck with my burner .. it's a piece of sh!t panasonic (matsushita) 8x that I got in Dec/00 ... still works, doesn't burn coasters and I've burned like a million CD's with it and done DAE the whole time. Every manufacturer makes duds, and some even get lucky and make a good drive from time to time 🙂
Get yerself a plextor 🙂

No problems here with my lite-on 16x dvd drive, or my plextor scsi drive....=)

All I know is if you get a third drive and the same thing happens, you might consider looking at other issues with your rig. It's pretty strange for two different drives to crap out on you...

I've had a lite-on 16x DVD since November. Its been fine. My 24x10x40x Lite on burner has been fine since late December. That being said, I'll not be supprised when they do break... I think both drive cost me total of $115

My friends seems to be going fine, hes got the 24x and will have probably burned around 250 in the 5 or 6 months hes had it...

Me, my 40x Plextors still going atrong after just over a month, it did about 175 in the first couple of weeks and probabably 30 or so since then....next week, ill probably have it doing another 75 or so.

I had the same thing happen with *gasp* a Plextor.
At first, it did not like to be on the same chain with a Seagate Harddisk when cable select was activated.

De-activated cable select and it work <--------------First piece of advice

it work for a month, and then stopped working again.

Put it on the other IDE chain with the DVD rom <-------------------Second piece of advice

Now it seems to work.

I've never, ever had a drive die on me, let alone my LiteOn 12X CD Writer. The first one may have been defective, but to have happened twice is more than coincidental. Check your power supply, (it may be supplying out of spec ampeages), and it if is the problem, you'll know what to replace 🙂.

Same happened to me with my Lite-On. Went through 2 of the 12x Version, bought in April of 2001. Exact same symptoms as yours! Same happened with the Lite-On DVD Drive I bought. Finally got a refund, and bought an LG 16x, for $85, on sale at BB (and got flamed for it at the time! 🙁 ) . Burned 300+ and not a coaster yet! 😉 Burns PERFECT masters at 4x that go to Dup houses.

<< Just for kicks, have you tried plugging it into a different IDE controller with a known good IDE cable? >>

i second that advice

if it just stops being detected but still works (leds and eject button), then it sounds like you have a faulty ide cable.

My ol SCSI Plextor 8/20X has burned in excess of 1000 CDR's and its still going strong. Bulit like a tank it is

I have few Lite-ons CDRW drives (two 16x series). No probs here, but I also own a Plextor 12x, still kicking ass since Dec 00. I think maybe, you got a bad batch from the place where you bought it from. The only thing i don't like about Lite-on is the noise on the spin up, esp the DVD drives.

My liteon CDRW 12x10x32 is almost ayear old and works great. it never botches a burn and can read those slightly scratched CDs with ease.
