Lite-On Firmware Question

I recently bought a Cendyne 24/10/40 from office max... The cdrw was labled Verbatim, however, I peeled that sticker off, and saw its actually a Lite-on LTR-24102B... The drive loads up on my computer as a verbatim, and i don't see any firmware upgrades from Verbatim..
So the question is, can i use the Lite-on firmware upgrade?

edit my typo: it loads up as a verbatim in the bios and windows 2000... The drive had a verbatim sticker on the top of the drive, and under it was the lite on sticker.

I would say yes you can. If it is loading up as a Liteon than it already has a Liteon firmware. Question why would you want to update the firmware? If it is functioning correctly i would advise against updating the firmware. Many times firmware upgrades go awry and you end up with a dead drive so unless you have a compelling reason for upgrading the firmware then i would not try to fix what wasn't broken.

I recently seen a post here on this forum of a user that was having problems after the firmware update so I to would recomend against updating firmware on lite-on burners unless there are problems!

It is loading up as a Verbatim............. also I may have a problem with the cdrom opening constantly.
I got two of these drives and the first one kept opening, and i put the second in, so far its working ok, but i have to wait a couple more restarts to know for sure.

Ok you led me to believe it was loading up as a Liteon. Definately has some problems that would warrant a firmware update. Have you tried quizzing verbatims tech support assuming such a thing exists. I would say that the liteon firmware should work with it as long as it will let you flash to the liteon firmware. Like Dreadogg said there have been some horror stories about firmware updates and liteons. It's taking a chance I would try and return it if that is possible. Lets see if i have this right. The drive is a Cendyne which has a Verbatim label on it with a liteon label under the Verbatim label right? This is all getting confusing. I have heard of cendynes being rebadged Liteons but not a liteon being rebadged as a verbatim in a cendyne box. :frown:
