lite-on dvd rom doesn't recognize DVD's

My new system, just a few weeks old, is having problems with my DVD rom. It works fine as a CD-rom, but every time I put a DVD into it and try to use the Powerdvd 4.0 that came with the drive, it tells me to 'insert a disk'. Disk's already IN there! I've tried several DVD's, and nothing exotic, just stuff I've bought at the local Blockbuster and Wal-mart.

I tried this drive for a week or so with my old p2 350(win98), and it worked ok, played dvd's fine, but now that I have it in my new system, it's nothing more than a CD-rom.

I uninstalled and reinstalled PowerDVD, then rebooted. Didn't help. Did some searching around, and it appears I'm unique in having this problem.

The device manager calls this a JLMS XJ-HD165h, and I did see that the drive itself has a 165h label on it. Can't find any drivers for it anywhere, and all the info I could find just says to let windows detect and add it automatically. BTW, I also deleted it and rebooted, it was found and added again, and it still doesn't play dvd's.

I'm about ready to chuck it out a window. Any thoughts would be welcome!

Thanks,
-John

Yeah, that's about what I thought. . .maybe we should take a crack at my network that doesn't network instead 🙂

Well, it's a new system, and a new OS for me, and new drives, so there are opportunities a-plenty for me to have screwed things up. . .however, I did try pointing powerDVD at both the cd-rw(w🙂 and the DVD-rom(v🙂. Didn't do any good.

I should mention that I did change the drive letters to V: for my DVD-rom and W: for my cd-rw, if that matters. I like putting them near the end of the alphabet, to give me room for future HD expansion.

Thanks,
-John

Try this:

Start PowerDVD
Click on the "Select Source" button and then choose "Open DVD files"
Navigate to your DVD-ROM and try to open one of the VOB files

At least this way you can see if your drive is even capable of reading the contents of the disc.

Could this be a problem with the TV out and drivers diasabling DVD playback ala nVidia? If you run newer drivers with an older nVidia card, the drivers disable DVD playback while if you rollback your drivers, you can watch the DVD. Are you getting any errors reguarding any SafeDisk copyright protection?

Tried navagating to the drive and opening a file, said no disk in drive. Dunno about the Radeon 7000 drivers. I'm using the first xp drivers I found. I WAS running win98se in the other machine when it worked, and using an old original GeForce card.

The drive spins awhile, on and off several times for like 30 seconds when I insert a dvd. No error msgs come up, just asks me to insert a disk. No Safedisk copyright msgs. I guess it's not recognizing it. Might be time for a new drive, even though it's only been used for about 4 hours total.. .

I actually took this drive apart. I have those flip-down 'stealth doors' on my new case, and I couldn't get it to fit without removing the front plastic piece. Probably not good for the drive 😱 however it did work after this butchery, in my older computer.

Thanks for the help so far.
