Hey all, I was recently in the market for a DVD drive, and at first wanted to get a sony or toshiba, but then heard their ripping sucked. I wanted a relatively quiet drive, but I have a TEAC 40X cd drive that sounds like an airliner here, so I guess I don't really care! With the Lite-On drives tho (I heard they are the best rippers) I am split between the old LTD-163 or the XJ-HD166S at newegg.....will they both perfrom about the same ripping wise, or noise wise? Thanks...

Hi BinZ,

I bought the 166S Retail from newegg and it works great: it's never failed to play a DVD all the way through, and has never locked up (unlike others I've tried)... The noise thing is fine, just a little noise when it spins up but after that it's quiet... It's also fast at reading files (unlike others I've tried)... Not sure about the ripping thing though... But my guess is that it would work great... You can check all the customer reviews at newegg... I say get it.

Love You!

I also bought the 166S Retail from newegg in December and my experience with it is just as HumbleFish described. Great drive so far.

I say go for it.
